"A 500 Million User Global Protective Net

When connected to the BRAIN, you gain access to a technology that analyzes 7 billion requests per day from over 500 million users worldwide. With this massive global overview, Bitdefender instantly detects new threats and keeps your devices, data, and identities safe."
    ..........
"Bitdefender, the creator of innovative global security software solutions, has launched Bitdefender Total Security Multi-Device, a stunningly comprehensive and blindingly fast way to protect your privacy, defeat even brand new malware, fend off fraud, ease online shopping and more on all your PCs, Macs and Android devices.
The company’s most comprehensive and evolved product to date is designed to tap the experience of 500 million users around the globe to "learn" faster than malware evolves – while maintaining the ease of use characterized by Bitdefender’s OneClick security philosophy.

Bitdefender Total Security Multi-Device is powered by BRAIN - Bitdefender Reflective Artificial Intelligence Networks - that has been five years in the making in the company’s award-winning labs. BRAIN processes almost 200,000 queries per second from users at all points of the globe. Using advanced algorithms modeled after the human brain, it extracts patterns from malware and stops threats from the moment they are created.
Everyone connected to the BRAIN will benefit from this self-learning technology and enjoy instant protection from any online hazards. Whenever a new online threat is detected, it takes BRAIN less than 3 seconds to protect its users from it, even if they’re half way around the world.

"We have been working for five years on BRAIN and Bitdefender Total Security Multi-Device, drafting, tinkering, testing and generally giving free rein to the creative geniuses in our labs,” said Bitdefender Chief Security Strategist Catalin Cosoi. "What we have come up with is the dream product of even the most sophisticated malware experts, the nightmare of online criminals worldwide, and the answer to the growing concerns of home and professional users worldwide."

Of course there is the consideration of how secure your (personal or corporate) data or other information on your computer(s) is/are using any remote servers. The data on many "cloud" servers are only protected by a user's weak password. Now perhaps the data being sent in the above poster's example is being protected better but unless one makes an effort to learn exactly how secure one's data is then one cannot expect much privacy. How secure are the servers to outside cracking?

So will you trust the word of sales people or will you decline the scheme to have your (personal or corporate) data entrusted to some remote servers who knows where in what other country's whose security and privacy laws are often not as strict as the one in which you live?

(This is not meant to knock Bitdefender's ability as an antivirus programme.)

    Best regards

Get used to it, the primary way to deal with blended, emerging threats are with systems like this. It's the way everyone is going. Trend is scoring 100% these days on almost all tests precisely because it has some reliance on a very deep, advanced, cloud based system (Deep Security).

Is this basically the same in functionality to Kaspersky Secure Network (KSN)?

When someone figures out what the BRAIN actually is, how it operates and communicates with your device and vice versa, would you please let us know by posting here :)

Bitdefender certainly makes it sound/look in it's marketing like a huge advancement.

    http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/total-security-multi-device.html

Is there a BitDefender person on Wilders with the status akin to Webroot's TripleHelix who dares to offer an explanation?

At this time it is only available in the USA from the Bitdefender site, meaning you get locked in with Avangate and its questionable/notorious self-renewal cancellation practices. (Google "Bitdefender Avangate Better Business Bureau"). It is also available through resellers in France, including Amazon, which may allow you to avoid involvement with Avangate.

I find it strange that there is not a single word about the BRAIN on the Bitdefender Forums.

Marketing gimmick or true advancement in protection? Who knows?

Not really sure what they are on about. Is this like a backend thing that affects all Bitdefender products (even free one) or is it yet another product in their countless line of meaninglessly placed products?

  7. Maybe it is automated anomaly analysis using their analysis tools of their backend server parc. For instance when I am using Internet payment from a weird location while my telephone and tablet are on another location. The transaction might be suspicious when my PC just installed software which surviced reboot and made it to ring-0.

Annyone who uses this feature could tell us what the privacy consequences are for using an AI-network.

You're confusing account info with data sending to cloud reputation system.
Though I don't know about BRAIN much, generally AV company's server which save your account info is different from cloud reputation server where your AV will send & receive data about e.g. file, URL, region etc.

Those cloud server are NOT protected by any of user password, and in most case those info sent are not PII, all clues which can include personal info such as your user name are striped before it leaves your PC.
Even if an employee in the AV company tried to abuse those info, still relating one of those info to a user's personal account would be quite hard if not impossible.

What I'm interested in is, they illustrated BRAIN with human thinking. So I assume they adopted any of neural-network including deep-learning, which is different from e.g. Webroot who says they use principle of maximum entropy.

Yeah, it's sad not many security vendor disclose even overview of their algorithm and BD seems to be no exception.
However, if my assumption is true, I personally think it has future.

It is known that machine learning algorithm itself is not a determinant to accuracy of spam filtering except Bayesian network which shows obviously different pattern from other algorithm, but I don't know if it can be also applied to malware classification and even so, neural network may evolve faster than most of other algorithm.

As of the moment it appears , at least from Bitdefender's descrption of it's current product-line's features, the BRAIN is only related to Bitdefender Total Security Multi- Device 2015, which I guess is a good way to market a $100 USD Security Suite/5 devices. The new Norton Security Multi Device/5 devices was thought to be over-priced at it's original price of $79, which the Norton Store after a week put on sale for $59 and which was recently being sold for $19 by resellers during Black Friday Week. Takes a lot to sell a 5-seat Suite for $100. It takes something totally unique and seemingly awesome like the mysterious - ambiguously explained BRAIN :)

Like much of modern advertising they appear to be selling an idea and a feeling (that you will have the absolute best protection provided by the BRAIN and that will make you feel good and good about yourself) rather than the product.

I remain mystified by there still being no mention of or reference to the BRAIN or the product on the Bitdefender Forums. Unless they are censoring questions about it, one would think that at least one Bitdefender user would want to know more about it. One possible explanation could be they are not yet fully set up for marketing it in the USA. As I mentioned, it's available on Amazon, France and other french resellers but not yet in the USA. For those in USA the Bitdefender Store/Avangate is the only source.

I tried to download the demo from Bitdefender and the only files in the download were two Bitdefender jpg.s

A user in BD forum posted
"I have been doing a bit of digging and am informed by BD that - "BRAIN technology is already part of all our products which we constantly improve and update. With our new Total Security Multi-Device we also decided to communicate the result of 5 years work in our labs. So, this self-learning technology that offers instant protection from any online hazards is available in each and every Bitdefender engine."
"It seems that BRAIN is incorporated into all the products, good news!"

LMAO :) Edward Bernays (aka "the father of public relations" and social propaganda) would be proud.

Interesting looking at the BD Website. ATM, the ONLY product that lists the BRAIN as a feature is BD TS M-D 2015.

Looking again at the BRAIN powered TS 2015 M-D press release there is nothing in it that contradicts the above quote from the BD Forums. Very clever copywriting.

I heard from a fairly reliable source that next year's Bitdefender Products will include the HEART. What it does is play a WAV sound to make it seem that your PC is crying whenever the BRAIN communicates to the HEART that it has detected malware on the system. It is going to be emphasized that the HEART has been in development and has been refined over a period of more than 200.000 years and will be promoted as a revolutionary advancement in security software being the first to give an audible warning of malware detection.

The same copywriter who wrote the TS 2015 M-D press release is said to have already developed next year's Bitdefender main marketing slogan: "You Gotta Have HEART"

Interesting choice of words, but a "brain" this system is not. Call it machine learning, Artificial intelligence, neural networks....

P.S. I believe other vendors also have similar technologies in place. This is just "BitDefender cloud protection"....

I don't see what's wrong. Firstly ML, AI and NN are all different each other.
I don't think many AV vendor use NN so I posted #9, as NN was not the best algorithm to classify spam mail at least in several years ago.
But NN and deep learning have been evolving more rapidly for this several years, so this might be part of reason BD adopted this algorithm to their cloud system as a company which got into the cloud system later.
Also one interesting thing is NN is really like "think by itself". Most other ML algorithm requires a "teacher" tells the machine "These are good sample, those are bad" or "This is important property", etc. In NN, it can find what property is important by itself.

FYI, Webroot clearly states it uses Maximum Entropy principle and also says many other vendor uses SVM. Those algorithm are not NN.

Nothing is wrong, it's just that it's too much of a marketing buzzword :D

Of course, these are different algorithms. Though, Computer Science isn't really my forte (I'm more of a physics/electronics guy).

So it is simple a Cloud protection feature right?

One thing that I dont like about Bitdefender is its agressive marketing and reviews, they all say that Bitdefender is superb fast with almost no impact on system performance but we all know that it isnt true.

I can relate to it.:) (and I'm not computer science guy too, but am mathematical science student, well, partly includes physics though it's not my majoring.
There's no such thing like simple cloud protection. Almost all AV vendor have different cloud system, I partly explained it here, though we can never know most major part thanks to it's cloud.
