Is there an AV out there that updates itself if I run it only and does manual scans? Like if I don't want to have active realtime protection, just on demand but don't want to bother with constantly having to wonder if I have the latest updates for it such us Kasperky Virus Removal Tool which gets updated always.

I just want an AV to scan when I want and that would update its definitions on demand.

I know about MBAM but that doesn't catch viruses just malware so what other choice do I have?

If I understand you correctly I don't see where any A/V product would not do what you want. Just disable real time protection. Run the update function and scan.

Just be sure you choose a product that has a reputation as being a good on demand scanner as many products blocking malware entry and behavior blockers to stop those that get through rather than on detection. Emisoft Anti Malware 9 would be a good choice as it is an excellent on demand scanner and has a separate update process.

Some AV products won't detect malware on your system until they become active.

Think you need to do a little research. There's plenty of independent testing organizations and reviews in online mags.

    see for example http://www.av-comparatives.org/

    http://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/avc_fdt_201409_en.pdf

    http://www.av-test.org/en/

You would be interested in On Demand Tests.

If a product did not participate in these tests you should probably avoid that product. Some companies refuse to participate in these on demand tets because there products in part rely in blocking malware in your system when it becomes active by use of their behavior blockers, and these products would not be suitable to your stated needs.

Clam finds some really obscure stuff - sometimes. Overall it's not great, but it does what you want. Clam is popular with opensource UTM's.

You need ClamWin which you can download here.

While this may not be of help since it seems you just want one antivirus installed, but, Avira has the option when you install it to not install the real time protection component. This enables it to be installed alongside any other antivirus, as without real time protection there will be no conflicts beween the two products.

I just installed Avira and the option is no longer there. It seems that you can't customise any options of the installer. Last time I tried Avria which would be well over 12 months ago I'm guessing, the option to not install real time protection was still there.

It's not a configuration issue, you could install it completely without the real time protection.

I'm guessing Ad-Aware still has this option which it calls Compatible Mode.

MBAM catches all malware, including viruses. What I use and recommend for on-demand scanning other than it are: HitmanPro, SUPERAntiSpyware, Comodo Cleaning Essentials, and Emsisoft Emergency Kit. There are lots more if you check my signature.

No realtime protection unless you download Clam Sentinel to go with it.

HitmanPro - you can set up it up to run at startup, it scans super fast and it uses multiple AV engines, cloud included, there is hardly a better choice. :)

but that needs a yearly subscription which I think is not worth it for a utility I will only occasionally use to scan

Free version is good enough for that, but it only detects, it does not remove, but still in order to remove something, you need to find it at first. :shifty:

Emsisoft freeware is a great product that does exactly that. In my opinion, it is the best product for that purpose mentioned so far on this thread.
