Secure Folders to protect folders (and use as anti-executable)

Discussion in 'other anti-malware software' started by Windows_Security, Oct 21, 2014.

  1. It does set ACL (access control list) for the folders you specify with options to hide, lock or set read only or no-exection. It supports wildcards, can be password protected and has a real easy to use interface. You can download it from here http://securefoldersfree.com/

You could add the safe-DLL registry tweak, to harden no-excection protection.

Have not tested the trusted applications yet, allowed windows install/installer and system restore

Thanx from me too. I had a quick play with it, & it worked fine. I also hid a folder & a FULL windows search didn't locate it. I expect that a more intensive search would, such as removing the drive & scanning from another comp. But that's to be expected ! It says it works in SafeMode too, which is nice, though i havn't tried it.

No info on the www on whose behind it etc though ?

This type of protection is handy when it comes to protecting your important files against ransom-ware, I use my old skool HIPS (Neoava Guard) for this. But it's interesting that it has an anti-exe function. For example, Hide Folders 5, does not offer this.

WoW Nice find indeed and oh how well timely seeing as I was Crypto Locked just last week and while running an AV (Qihoo 360 IS) didn't stop it :gack:

Luckily I managed to kill it off and deleted ever folder it compromised with windows native encryption proggy. At least I think it uses windows own crap to infiltrate even worse crap. I finished by doing a windows 8 REFRESH. Whew! I hate That Thing!

EDIT: Just d/l and installed. Think this is going to become very useful given the degree of what's floating thru unmonitored channels lately. What apps should be placed in it's TRUSTED column? Thanks

    Regards EASTER

  12. We have our photo's on two PC's a NAS and a USB-disk (not at home). Wife's laptop is leading, she makes copies to NAS and I pull changes from NAS to my 2nd HD, so I have 2nd HD read-only with syncback free as trusted ap.

Not a conflict as such, but Locked folders on a partition shadowed (virtualized) by Shadow Defender didn't work when I tried it. The "Locked" folders on the shadowed partition was accessible by all programs.

EDIT: Just to be absolutely clear, I should have added that on a non-shadowed partition, the Locked folders feature worked just fine.

Thank you ! I wonder if someone could test his anti-executable feature.

You should easily be able to test it yourself. Just take some utility like leaktest.exe from grc.com. Then add it to the protected files and it should block it

I've done a little test of creating different folders on virtualised system disk (by Shadow Defender on Vista)...in each folder it was few installation files:
    - folder called "Hidden" made as "hidden"...it was no way to find it both in system explorer and file-managers like FreeCommander and 7-zip
    - folder called "Locked" made as "locked"...no way to open it
    - folder called "Notexe" as "no-execution"...I was unable to run each one installator.
For me Secure Folder works as it should.

The Locked folders test that failed for me was on a virtualized data (non-system) partition on a Windows XP system. When I get time, I'll reinstall SecureFolders and run a full set of tests to see if I can reproduce the problem.

Yes, I do have the latest version of SD but I haven't noticed any problems regarding system stability with Shadow Mode enabled. As soon as I get time I will retest SecureFolders with Shadow Defender and see whether I get the same results as last time.

I will try to test it when I get a new machine, but from a technical point of view, it should be able to protect your files, because only certain "trusted apps" have access to your protected files. So ransom-ware can not touch it.

On the other hand, it also depends on how "child processes" are handled. Let's say MS Word has access to your files, and CryptoWall gets executed by MS Word, then you may be out of luck with tools like Secure Folders. HIPS like Neoava Guard will restrict child processes from access to your files, no matter what rights the parent process has.

You might also want to check out Hide Folders 5, to see if it's perhaps some flaw in Secure Folders.
