Breaking bad. Going wild! Kim Wilde. Eh. Anyhow, yes, a review and initial impressions of DD-WRT open-source firmware replacement for Cisco/Linksys WRT54GL router, covering background story and information, upgrade process, look & feel, options, performance results covering interface responsiveness and latency under heavy load, Samba sharing over encrypted Wireless, direct downloads and torrents, other considerations, and more. Why? Because. Read. http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/dd-wrt.html Cheers, Mrk
Nice Any chance of adding how-to for installing OpenVPN and/or Tor? There are many out there, I know, but many are incomplete, incomprehensible, etc.
"Customer firmware"? Anyways, thanks for the review. I might try one of those myself when I'm the one managing the network.
I use Tomato myself but I l have nothing against DD-WRT. I love the customized WRT-GRTGL routers. With the firmware available, you can do almost any wireless networking function. Mirmir, I should update my thread on using OpenVPN with Tomato. What surprised me was how easy it was, especially for an OpenVPN client. Tomato USB with OpenVPN has two client and two server connections. I am going to try setting up an OpenVPN server too. It is just a little more complicated for an OpenVPN server. I've generated the certificates and now just need to update the firmware on the router I want to use. I've been swamped with work the last few weeks and haven't had time to mess with it.
DD-WRT was great on my old WRT-G45 router, but I've always found stability and performance not good enough on newer routers and I've tried it a number of times over the years.
I've been using third-party router firmware for so long that I don't remember why I started, but I find some of the extra features you get indispensable. For instance, a bandwidth tracker (that shows you how much data you've transferred during the month) is very useful for those of us on caps. Maybe today's routers have that, but I don't know.
