ESET is proud to announce version 8 of ESET Smart Security.

Available languages: English, Français canadien (French Canadian), Slovenčina (Slovak), Čeština (Czech) and Deutsch (German).

*All other languages will be available soon.

Key features available in version 8:

    • Botnet protection: Brand new technology that protects against infiltration by botnet malware to prevent spam and network attacks detected in outbound traffic from your computer. Botnet protection searches outgoing network communications for known malicious patterns, and matches the remote site against a blacklist of malicious ones. Any detected malicious communication is blocked and reported to the user. Click to view a screenshot.
    • Enhanced Exploit Blocker: Protects against attacks on web browsers, PDF readers, Office documents, as well as Java communications and Java-based software that provides the ability to eliminate lockscreens and ransomware.
    • ESET SysRescue Live: The next generation of the ESET SysRescue utility, ESET SysRescue Live allows you to create a bootable disk, in the form of a USB flash drive or CD/DVD, with the ability to scan and clean your system even when you cannot boot into Windows. ESET SysRescue Live is a Linux-based malware cleaning tool that runs independent of the operating system from the ESET Smart Security retail CD.
    • HIPS Smart mode: Only suspicious system events trigger a notification beyond the set of pre-defined rules in Automatic mode (operations such as system registry, active processes and programs).
    • ESET Cybersecurity Education (North America only): New Cybersecurity Education introduces a more interactive and game-like approach to training. This replaces the previously named ESET Cybersecurity Training (note: the new name change is not reflected in the UI yet).
For more information including purchasing and downloading the product, visit the ESET product pages at the following links or contact your local reseller, distributor or ESET office:

I just went to download, selected ESET Antivirus, offline installer, etc. Then ran it, and it automatically upgraded.

Although I see no difference with 7 vs 8 in the Antivirus only product.

Download it manually, and install it over the old one.

Got it. Even if you don't need to I always uninstall the old version before upgrading. Doing a full scan now for the heck of it.

Very rarely does that ever alert of the latest version. Always have to watch the forums here or the ESET official forums to see what's up.

Sounds like a very basic flaw that should be repaired.
I always can't help but wonder when the little things are left undone, what is really happening with the more important things?

Remember when ESET had a plugin for Thunderbird until recently? The problem was, it worked on only 3-4 year old versions of Thunderbird.. I mean - remove it or update it. Leaving it like it was looked really bad. The update thing sort of looks bad as well.

What I thought was weird is that mine didn't say Smart Security 7. Was that the latest version?

I don't get why they even left it in there for so long. You don't even need the plugin: https://forum.eset.com/topic/2959-thunderbird-ver31-disables-eset-addon/?hl=thunderbird Although the plugin did offer some sort of spam protection or something. http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2138&locale=en_US

I still have found no info about whether V8 will be available via the in-built updater or not, yet.
Smaller updates may not always be released as PCU's, but major version releases usually does, we'll see.

I always do clean installs myself on new versions even if over the top installs are supported.

And FWIW, Marcos said that they most likely will drop support for older TB versions in the future...

I ended up downloading the new build from the USA ESET website as none of the other regions I tried had version 8 available for download. As with version 7 to the version 8 beta, I installed the new release over the top of the V8 beta and it's working like a charm - very light and barely makes a dent on system resources.

I'm still befuddled by the reviews on testing websites live AV-Test as they rate ESS as being heavy on resources...I simply don't understand how and if I were Eset, I'd be asking them questions.

The French version has not been released yet, only Canadian french.
At the moment you have to download it manually from the site I posted earlier, installs over the top are supported. Resource usage is similar to V7, the firewall is pretty much the same, apart from the added botnet protection at the network layer.
    You're welcome ;)

I can 'feel' ESET, even on 4, 6, and 8 core systems. While I still consider it light, I can feel it. It doesn't consume resources like other products which I find can spike CPU, or use a fairly 'regular' amount of CPU threads. Eset is very good about avoiding this but to me it's meaninless - after you get over 4 cores CPU use on an AV is meaningless, and after 8GB of RAM who cares about ram use? But with ESET I feel an overall (albeit low) drag on the system. I think if I spent the time testing I would find what these tests find. Also, I found ESET's web scanning to have an impact to the point I disabled it, most specifically during some streaming depending on the source. I am hoping ESET will work on their interface, work to reduce system impact.
