I downloaded a Sandboxie portable (SandboxiePortable_2.3.0.4) but can't figure out how to get it to work. I extracted it to a folder on my USB. Then it said that it didn't install properly and so it installed again. So I have the folder. What next? I can't figure out how to use it?

There is no official portable version for Sandboxie. It defeats SBIE's purpose installing from a modified version from a shady source.

As a good alternative, you might want to consider VirtualBox Portable. I use it and find it great.

@dogbite, I'm rather interested in knowing how the heck that works, seeing as Virtualbox requires a driver to be installed...

Well, you need admin privileges to run it, but that is the only downside.

    For details please see: http://www.vbox.me/

I run it in from an external HDD E-sata and so far it worked great. Nothing is installed (permanently) on my computer.

Some of these so-called portable software can load the driver on-demand. I could be wrong though.

    @dogbite
Are you sure? Check your registry. =X

They probably install the driver on startup and uninstall it on exit. I probably jumped the gun when stating "shady source" by not bothering to research what you're talking about, but a link next time please.

I don't think providing any links regarding this is allowed. Technically speaking, this can be considered as a copyright violation towards Sandboxie since it is not an open-source software and neither Tzuk nor Invincea had ever made any official portable version of Sandboxie. Everyone can't just simply modify the program themselves and then distribute it.

EDIT: Didn't know there was a portable version planned. Thanks to JRViejo for pointing this out.

Not really. But if I clean the registry I should be fine, right?

I'm not sure, there could be other remnants left over somewhere. From what I've seen if a portable program requires an administrative privilege to run, it usually isn't truly portable. Not to mention that we can't freely use it on any computers we don't have admin access to.

GrafZ, there used to be a Sandboxie "Contributed utility" called Sandboxie portable. The guy who created it had permission from Tzuk. It has not been updated for a long time, I am not sure if it works or not with version 4. As far as I know, there are no plans from Invincea to have something like it in the future.:)

I didn't realize this. Thanks. It was a copy that was posted in the Sandboxie forum so I assumed that it was official.

I also have this and I love it. I have Windows 7 on vitualbox portable inside of a truecrypt container. So before I open the truecrypt folder, I enable Shadow Defender on my real computer. Then I open the TC folder and run the VM. I also have SD installed there, and of course Sandboxie too. Maybe I am easily amused but I think this is so cool! I have VPNs installed as well. So I can run a VPN on my real computer and then run a different VPN on my VM. And of course even the Tor Browser if I want. I have 8G's of RAM so no problems.

I am going to buy a large USB and install virtualbox portable there too inside of a Truecrypt container with Truecrypt portable installed. And I have Open VPN portable as well. So if I were on a friend's computer I could run the VPN portable from the USB and then run another VPN from the portable virualbox (if there is enough RAM available). Pretty darn cool if you ask me. So I had heard of Sandboxie portable and thought that would be pretty cool to have too. Oh well. Maybe it will be available some day.

Yes, that's the one that you were talking about, Caspian. The utility did not come from Sandboxie but it was approved by Tzuk. If you are going to try it to see if it works with Sandboxie version 4, I suggest you get the installer from the link I posted. I wouldn't trust an installer from anywhere else.

Yes, I know Tzuk/Invincea themselves never released any portable version of Sandboxie. But considering the official developer was aware of it and permitted it, I will treat it as semi-official.

Thanks. I have that installer but I don't understand ow to get it to work. Maybe I'll give it another try. I t said not to install it on a computer with Sandboxie installed, so I uninstalled Sandboxie while Shadow Defender was enabled. Still no luck.

I see the instructions talk about a README.TXT. You should read that but I don't know where you get it from. If you are interested on trying this thing out perhaps you should read the whole thread.
