So at the minute I'm using Kaspersky internet security 15, after "attempting" to read there terms and policies, it appears as long as I don't sign up the kaspersky security network I'll be fine. Is this true? and what other options are there out there that are competitive?

Best paid product that does less data collection = Emsisoft Products (Antivirus, Firewall, Suite)

Best free products that does less data collection = AVIRA, Panda

In some way, shape or form, these antivirus companies do have to do some type of data collection, in order to properly diagnose/troubleshoot/identify a malicious file or website.

But, the above that I listed, I find among the best, that do less data collection.

Fine from what? What do you expect that is happening from been connected to KNS network? Paranoia only help hackers and virus writers. Relax, sit-back and if you pay for a security solution do use all the protection feature that they offer you and that you paid for. Otherwise best to unplug from internet. Only then you will be sure that no information is leaked from your system :D

Userdata? What you expect an antivirus is colleting from you? Your banks logs? Or your Social Security Number? Your precious cooking recepies? Unless you have something to hide (crime? illicit behaviour? malware development?) you should not worry about what is collected. For example, Kaspersky will collect the website been visited, malware been detected, your PC name and uselog name, etc. Do you think Kaspersky care about you visiting a xxx site? Please do realise that competition is looking closely to this and if something wrong is found it will be quickly leaked out resulting in a devasting impact for the company reputation and business. It is way too stupid to take this risk and economically non-sense. So, please don't get tempted to be driven away by FUS and choose software that provides you the best protection (and use all feature for that purpose). Concerned about privacy? There is no privacy on the net... its a lost battle from the start. AMEN :)

I'm not disagreeing with you on what you said about, "don't be on the net" etc. However, "its a lost battle from the start". Srly? so your ready to ~Snip~ to every company and give up privacy and ultimately freedom.

    Edited for language.

No, you should just focus on the things you are most likely to achive as user. Privacy is not one of them. Protection yes... you have options to choose which software is likely to offer more protection for you sensitive data. Protection intended as threats from the outside and not from your own tools!!!! You are just wasting your time on the wrong priorities ;)

Are you also worried about what type of data your ISP have in their logs....if not, then why do you worry about this. I agree with fax for the most part.

Then most of your data is in the hands of the VPN provider that not always has malware/firewalling/tracking in mind when offering the service.
So, an oversight from your provider and basically all your data belong to us...

I am not sure there are many services that combines VPN with malware filtering, tracking protection, firewalling... I know just one but still in closed beta ;)

I pay via anonymous mailed cash with my account number on it plus the VPN is based around NOT keeping logs at all.

JFYI the VPN won't prevent the AV from collecting your PII since the AV software is installed in your local system. Also, I hope you're not using the same VPN with the VPN you use for your pseudonymous activities when you are required to reveal your true identity, like bank logins or online purchasing.

I don't know the answer to that, sorry. However, if you are attempting to prevent sensitive information from leaving your device, you're going to want to make traffic observations at some point. Network capture tools such as Wireshark can be helpful. Where an AV feature revolves around a browser extension, configuring your browser to display traffic may be helpful. If there is a debug log you can find or turn on, that may helpful. Those, plus serious research into how things are supposed to work, may help you to zero in on the features of interest and determine which settings (if any) would accomplish your goals.

Take your time and work through it. Don't expect much help. Study things and really try to understand what you're doing and what reductions in protection you might be causing. Verify everything you can.

The less AV collects, the worse detection it has, so just look for AV with the worst detection and you will get what you ask for, like ClamAV.

Somewhere I saw a link to test results for the "no network connection" scenario. Can't remember where that was. It wasn't the recent post focused on packers. Anyway, that type of testing could shed more light on which AVs have the features and downloadable updates that would make them better suited to no-cloud scenarios.

Come to think of it, AVC's Heuristic/Behaviour test is done without a network connection isn't it?

@doctortutorials: What are you concerned about... 1) having URL/file info sent to the cloud, or 2) having that information logged/retained by the cloud?

Once information leaves your machine you have lost control over it and you cannot know what happens to it (unless there is a leak or usage that somehow becomes known to you). So for some, #1 is the concern. If you prevent information from being exposed to party X, then party X can't possibly mishandle it or have it taken from them etc.

However, others... those who "trust" AV companies... are willing to expose their information to the cloud as long as the company's stated policies are deemed acceptable. So for example, if a cloud-AV company said they will use the information you send them to build/improve their systems but they won't keep detailed records of what you sent them for longer than a few days, would you find that satisfactory?
