I was just checking out add-ons for Opera and came upon this. https://zenmate.com/ I installed it in the new chromium based Opera. The bandwidth is good. The website says eventually there will be a paid premium service with unlimited traffic and free accounts with limited traffic but right now they are giving away free accounts for the full service. There are only five exit nodes to chose from, US, Britain, Germany, Switzerland and Hong Kong. This is kind of interesting. It isn't exactly a full on VPN since it only affects the traffic from one browser. It is more like an encrypting proxy for one browser. It didn't pass a dns leak test so I wouldn't recommend it for anonymity. It is good enough to bypass a lot censorship. I didn't think that a browser plugin alone would be able to provide true vpn protection but it is enough to watch BBC from the states. I wouldn't pay for this but it is a good freebie. Has anyone else tried this?
Yeah, just about everything I think is there. It is just an encrypting proxy, not a true VPN. It totally failed a DNS leak test but it's good enough to fool the BBC website. Good for getting around censorship and browsing censored media but that's about it. It fails as a privacy protector and doesn't live up to the claims of the developer. I did the same DNS test with VPNgate/Softether and TOR and neither leaked my real IP.
The thread suggests if you install flashcontrol that your ip is not leaked anymore. I do have flashblock installed in chrome which i expect will do the same. Not tested yet. thanks for the link grafzeppelin
here try a dns leak test for your-self to see if yours leak or not? https://www.dnsleaktest.com/ I tried it with zenmate on my system with Torch and no leaks reported. So I do not know what did that poster do or use to show DNS leak from zenmate?
Tried the dnsleaktest with opendns and german setting in zenmate. (resident in the UK) Reports united states which i expect is the opendns servers. No flashcontrol installed on chrome
well i tried mine with german setting and it shows germany for vpn with USA, which is good, since I am in canada with my ip provider DNS. So zenmate is doing its job well.
Did you run the "Standard test" or the "Extended test"? You could also run the standard test at https://www.grc.com/dns/dns.htm That will find every DNS server that your system knows about.
Don't know why people still use those relics of the past when modern browsers have click-to-play. And I've already said what's needed about ZenMate in the link.
I used dnsleaktest.com and did both standard and extended tests. The standard test found my real IP within seconds on a laptop with no vpn connection. I used Opera 23. Flashblocker doesn't work with Opera 23 but I did have Scriptblocker, Ghostery and Adblock Plus installed. On a laptop running Softether connected to VPNGate the same configuration didn't find the exit node IP and gave me the same results as running the dnsleaktest.com in another browser. That makes ZenMate unreliable at best. Not what you want if you want real privacy and anonymity but being able to watch the BBC feeds from the states is nice and I will continue to use it for that. I like it in my VPNGate setup because VPNGate servers are subject to local censorship and every now and then I want to see something that is censored by my exit node.
here are 2 more vpns free for browser via add-ons. One is called "dotvpn" and the other is "browsec". |They both are similar to zenmate. Also they passed the dnsleak test I did. SO does anyone know how good they are in term of protection and speed and unlimitness? Which you suggest: Zenmat or dotvpn or browsec in CHROME?
From what I can understand those browser extensions will only secure your browsing traffic like web proxies. If your main goal is protection and reliability, despite I'm being a privacy ignorant, I would suggest to use a standalone paid VPN. Free VPNs usually have too many limitations for them to be properly usable.
If one needs just a proxy for browsing, or is using a device with no decent VPN client app, these browser plug-in proxies may be adequate. But they're more likely to leak, and can't be secured through routing and firewall settings. They're probably better than running a proxy switcher plug-in with a bunch of free HideMyAss proxies. But that's not saying much
A quick correction, dnsleaktest.com found my ISP's dns name server IP, not mine. They differ only by a few digits and I didn't look close enough. So the dns leak extends as far as finding out who my ISP is and where my ISP is located which betrays my geographic location. This is still not good but better than having my actual IP. Having one part of my web traffic using a proxy and the rest using my real IP on the same computer is not the best of scenarios. Having all the internet traffic on the whole machine pass through a VPN is much better. Going a bit further, I have been looking at VPNs that support router level VPN connections using ddwrt or tomato. That seems to be the way to go if you are going to pay for a vpn. Then the issue is to bypass the VPN router connection for the small number of instances I want to use my real IP as well as having a provider with good bandwidth.
Actually I've just realized that Zenmate leaks my IP on reddit. When I check "account activity" I get both Zenmate's IP and the VPN's one which should be supposed not to be there...
Yes, well I use flash control. On reddit there is no flash content anyway... I checked CryptoGhost plug-in. No leaks but much slower than Zenmate. Also, this evening the Austrian server is apparently down.
Try the built-in plugin control, be it click-to-play or disable. Or might as well completely disabling the Flash Player plugin. If still doesn't work, then it is its flaw.
