Just curious how stable is Debian 8? I know it has been for around awhile but I am not familiar with their testing system. Pretty much what I am missing is Steam which is only for Debian 8. And I don't want to be doing some crazy hacking around to get it working on 7. From my limited experience with linux crazy command work = something getting messed up in the process.
I haven't tried it myself, but I think it'd work well enough. Just be cautious of updating it too frequently after install, some the updates might not be as stable/tested and might break something.
Certainly: 1st: Edit /etc/apt/sources.list by replacing "wheezy" with "jessie" or "testing" 2nd: Save sources.list file when done 3rd:sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade 4th: Repeat Step #3 a few times. If terminal shows x number of files will be held back, then go to Step 5: 5th: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade I just did all the above. Details in debianwiki.org Cheers!
I swear to god Mattdocs, I'm going to find out where you live and make you use Debian testing. lol. You won't regret it buddy. Good luck, it's only editing a text file. you can regenerate the sources.lst if you stuff up anyway, or you can copy paste it somewhere on your system even as a backup. testing main contrib non-free
well I just want 8 not really testing. which means 2 years from now when new testing comes out - i dont want.
Hey buddy with all due respect do check out what Debian testing is it sounds exactly what you want, whether its 7 or 8, it doesn't matter. testing basically is a rolling release. An up to date, current stable rolling release distro xd
I don't really need most up to date distro, for me stability is more important. The only reason I wanted to try something more up to date was because of Steam. Having said that, I did take a plunge and I am upgrading as we speak to Jessie. Hopefully the process will go smoothly.
