And Microsoft screwed the pooch with its 3.51 NET. update. Windows repeatedly refused to complete installation of the security patch.

In the end, I hid it because it wasn't worth going through loop hell for!

No idea why this became so disastrous lol. Were all the testers sleeping at work? :D

Was the 32-bit Windows 7 affected too? Let's make a conspiracy theory, were all (or at least most) of the systems affected by these problematic updates 64-bit?

I use seven 32 bit: I had - " had " becauseafter the issue I restored a previous disk image - not BSOD, but my pc went spontaneously in stand bye and then froze: reboot didn't work, the one thing that I could do was shut down and then turn on my pc.

From what I had read it seemed that it was predominantly x64 systems (Win Seven & Eight) that were affected. It wouldn't surprise me if Bork Tuesday didn't tank x86 as well. Oddly, I thought that the updates went surprisingly well on my old Vista x86 laptop.

Windows 7 64bit system here and so far so good. No problems with the updates (so far). (meanwhile, knocking on wood and trying to stay calm here)

Because I had not specified earlier, all of the affected systems were Windows 7 x64. Interestingly the windows 8.1 machines seem to have no issues, though I uninstalled the updates anyway.

Interesting. Was the hardware similar on the affected computers?

It seems one of the problems was with a font.

They all had AMD graphics. Haven't had issues with the nVidia or Intel machines.

Interesting ... I've got win7 x64 and my graphics controller is AMD Radeon HD 6400 series, and I've had no problems since the update, so I didn't bother with that uninstall.

These were the Radeon 46xx series. I don't know that it is the only factor, probably not. On top of the BSOD, the affected machines were also very slow after installing the updates. Removing them resolved that issue as well. They are all Intel CPU, quad core, 8GB of RAM. They also have RAID 1 (uses Intel chipset for the RAID). They are also all dual monitor. Don't know if any of that makes a difference or not.

I wonder when they're ever going to get these re-released?? :doubt: No problem on XP, just waiting to get the latest "final" version before doing another clean integrated reinstall. :D

Must not be a simple fix...

If I never uninstalled the original updates, as I'd noted above, do I need to do so before getting the reissued version? Or does WU handle that automatically?

(Edit) Just ran WU and the new one loaded and installed OK, so I presume that's looked after -- it's small and quick, the new restore point was by far the longest part of the procedure.

The security bulletin says that "Microsoft strongly recommends that customers who have not uninstalled the 2982791 update [i.e., the old version, released on Patch Tuesday] do so prior to applying the 2993651 update [the new version]." This recommendation applies to users whether they are having problems with the old update or not. Note that Windows Update and Automatic Updates do not remove the old version.....http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-reissues-flawed-windows-security-update-7000033049/
