So the free version is mostly a gui change? Sounds like most the improvements are for the paid version.

So, the free version is still stuck with idiotic 24 hour update cycle. Seriosuly AVG, it's 2014 and not 1995.... Also don't like the interface. They apparently have zero design skills to be copying Bitdefender interface directly...

Actually even the old interface wasn't good. It was original, i agree with that, but wasn't good at all. All black with too much green for details and all cramped in a fixed size buttons and menus that were often too small for the info that needed to be displayed on screen.

You can always right-click the icon in taskbar and choose update now at anytime you want.... but yes i agree that 24h is way too long, that should be atleast every 4 hours or something....

I don't agree that AVG copied BD interface. AVG 2014 had a similar interface and now the changes are made to the icons and other details.
And regarding the updates, AVG has a separate process for definition updates. Just add it to windows task manager and schedule the updates as per your wish. Atleast they have given that option and not like ZA where the user has pretty much no choice but stick with updates every 24 hrs only.

avast! has that if we exclude streaming updates and it has worked just fine for years. Plus, it always checks on system startup regardless of the 4 hour check, so you're always up to date when system is started. Unlike some AV's where you run the PC in the morning and AV decides to wait for an update check another 3 hours. Well, i'm starting to browse now and not 3 hours in teh future. Bloody update itself!

Not sure if that tells me anything. They may just as well hardcoded the 1 update check per day to "Automatic". They use this term very vaguely. Automatic is for some with check every hour, for others every 6 hours and for third, every 24 hours...

yup even the paid ones give you nags to buy extra junk so imo they are not needed at all. kind of shooting themselves in the foot there. if people pay for a av dont serve them ads!!!!!!!

But it all comes back after program update... avast! was in the same boat before and it's interesting AVG hasn't leanred anything from their competitor. While everyone always want you to buy the highest possible package, people who did buy any edition shouldn't be bombarded by ads. They decided for a lower version with a reason, so don't annoy them by trying to sell them more than they already bought. In the end they will just switch to competitor or stay with free and you'll get zero income from that user. Apparently no one thinks about that. avast! added option to disable ads manually if you're a paid user. Not ideal but at least an option.
