I'm sure the copyright police would tell you it's illegal, but it's nothing they are going to actually try to enforce. They're too busy making sure nobody is watching or listening to stuff that wasn't overpaid for or worth buying period. The emulators themselves are perfectly fine, it's the roms that some folks would get uptight about. Just be careful where you get them from, as a lot of them are on some not so perfect websites. Also make sure you have some sort of controller, trust me, playing with the keyboard really bites with a lot of those old games. I've done everything from Atari to Playstation (the Playstation roms are where you start risking anti-P2P people coming along. Below that you're fine.).

In the past I've played around with SSSPSX. But no matter what I did I couldn't fix my graphical glitch issues. So I gave up on them. I also played Project64, but there weren't many games I wanted to play in Nintendo 64 system anyway. And my computer is still not powerful enough for PCSX2. :argh:

These days I only emulate games in MAME. I like the fact that they brought the CV-1000 driver back. Unfortunately, it's still not good IMO. I tried a few games and none of them had the slow down rate emulation without using the blitter delay setting, and even with that it still feels wrong. I'm fine to not having a perfect slow down rate, but at least make it proper. Sure, it can be improved. But knowing that MAME developers are lazy I don't think it will happen anytime soon.

If you are talking about downloading commercial ROMs, the answer is mostly not. Perhaps it's a little safer to download ROMs of defunct companies, but still, providing/asking for ROMs or talking about it usually will get you banned in emulation forums.

Possibly because in the case of amiga emulation, cloanto paid some money for the kickstart roms for their "amiga forever" emulation package.
If no companies are offering commercial versions then it will be fine.

I liked emulators on my PSP, until I sold it. As for touchscreen devices, no way. Didn't like them for computers either, until I got a free Buffalo Classic USB Gamepad.

Now I have a bunch of ZSNES roms. Not really concerned about legal safety tbh, but as harmless as multimedia files in terms of computer security.

Yeah, I forgot about NullDC and DEmul lol. I have proven it myself that Sega is a lot better than Sony in terms of gaming console even only with emulators. :D

Seems still not fully matured yet, at least according to their FAQs.

I personally don't see much value in emulating PS3 anyway. There's barely anything worthy to play in that system. I can't even describe how bad Resident Evil 5 and 6 are. But perhaps the worst part would be...

...they killed Wesker. WTH Capcom?! >=V

I love how games look on emulators over HD remakes. Console games even made in the 2000s look terrible on TVs because of their small screen resolution and lack of anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering.

The HD remakes like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DuckTales_(video_game) to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DuckTales:_Remastered

I like WayForward and like some of things they did with the remake, but I just feel the emulators can clean up the original games enough where they can still appeal to nostalgia seekers and new players alike.

    Same with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocarina_of_time to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Ocarina_of_Time_3D

Emulators with original games: like copper cleaner on a penny from 1920.
HD remakes: a shiny penny made within the last year with new markings

I just feel emulators best keep the old games experience from fading away.

MAME 0.154 just released and of course I wanted to see how much it has improved (via MAMEUI). Nope, slow down emulation is still not proper yet and the sound lags still persist. Why-oh-why do those games flagged as "Working"? It should be "Imperfect" instead. Seriously. >=V

    Hope this helps:

Eh? Mind mentioning some examples? With the exception of SH3 games, usually when a game is deemed as playable in MAME it really means the game is fully playable.

I'll try to look on those later.

As for now I only have MAME, which I am also using MAMEUI to audit ROMs. Until I know how to audit ROMs within the original MAME itself, I just use MAMEUI to do some tasks I need. Sometimes I also play in MAMEUI, no difference in the core obviously. My favorite arcade ROMs are:
    - 19XX - The War Against Destiny
    - DonPachi
    - DoDonPachi
    - DoDonPachi DaiOuJou Black Label
    - DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu 1.5* (I wish to play the Black Label version though, but apparently still not supported yet and nobody seems to have dumped the ROM for it)
    - ESP Ra.De.
    - Espgaluda
    - Espgaluda II*
    - Giga Wing
    - Guwange
    - Mushihimesama 1.0* (want to play 1.5, but there's no ROM for it either AFAIK)
    - Mushihimesama Futari Black Label*
    - Progear no Arashi
    - Strikers 1945
    - Strikers 1945 II (one of the boss is the origin of my current username :D)
    - Strikers 1999

    *not emulated properly yet
**I wish someday I will also be able to emulate DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou and Giga Wing 2 in MAME

In the past I also really liked SSSPSX to emulate Playstation games. It works better than PCSX and ePSXe for me personally. Some games I emulated with it:
    - Resident Evil 2
    - Resident Evil 3 - Last Escape
    - Vigilante 8
    - Vigilante 8 - 2nd Offense

    Retro 4 evar!

Tested in MAMEUI64 (core MAME 0.154):

    Metal Slug

    Slug1A.jpg

    Slug1Comb.jpg

    Metal Slug 2

    Slug2A.jpg

    Slug2Comb.jpg

If it's the same as Kawaks that is listed in emulator-zone. Otherwise I'm not sure. Sorry.

The missing ROMs/CHDs error? Since you've already stated that you have neogeo.zip (though your file size is smaller, mine is 1.41 MB), it could be that the games' ROMs themselves are not complete. If that's the case, try to find ROMs from other sources.

I just realized oddities there. Why is the ROM's name Metal Slug.zip? It should be named as mslug.zip for Metal Slug 1 and mslug2.zip for Metal Slug 2. And why is the file size over 135 MB? Even both Metal Slug 1 and Metal Slug 2 combined shouldn't be bigger than 30 MB.

Emulators of machines which had copyrighted BIOS or had OS or copyrighted BASIC are ILLEGAL (like MSX,Orao,Galaksija,Apple ][...).
I use and I am legal safe emulator of soviet BK Elektronika computer which BASIC is now free open sourced with some games which released or re-released as freeware, also I use,DOSBox,MAME with ROMs from official site, and emulator of Odysee console...They are perfectly legal

I have both emulators for Amigas and Atari's and the real thing. I've been using emulators for both for around 14 years and the emulation for both has matured considerably over the years, especially Winuae for the Amiga. In most cases the emulated system is light years faster than the real thing but not all software is always compatible, especially games. I've also used emulators for Atari 8 bit game systems. Not quite the real thing but much more convenient. I wouldn't worry about legal issues with the ROMs. Both companies are long gone and the same sites have had them online for years for download without being shut down. In other words, while they still may be legally copyrighted, there is no one out there enforcing the copyrights and they are, effectively, abandonware.
