I remember when Skype was good and easy to upgrade.

Microsoft will likely want to make sure everyone gets to see the ads they've started serving in it. After all, they'll need to see a return on the $8.5 billion they paid for the company. Time to switch to an open source alternative...

I use skype just for the telephone functions. I'm using version 3 for Windows and an old version for nokia phones. I don't need or want the new version. The newer versions don't work well with my router/firewall setup. Skype has tried to disable the version I'm using but I found out that blocking "ui.skype.com with a firewall or hosts file lets it keep functioning. If that stops working, I will have to find another alternative and skype will lose a paying customer.

Or they want everybody to switch to a version where NSA has the keys to decrypt in real-time .
After all, micr0$0ft is largely owned by the state- This is documented in The Comprehensive Annual Fiscal Reports .

Yup, pre MS versions are the ones to use, "if" you do choose Skype. I don't use Any such Apps though !

    @ MisterB

Good tip about the FW/HOSTS block.

I got two emails from Skype informing me that my mobile version of Skype is being retired. Did they drop support for older mobile (Android) version also?

Same email here - i'm getting sick of skype - only reason i still use it is because i have family and friends that use it... but now i'm thinking of switching to ooVoo or Viber, and hoping others do too... (Jitsi would be even better for the encryption/privacy but it's unrealistic to expect other to use it)

Yes, I also use it only to talk to my sister and at work to connect to my co-workers. Don't know if I will switch in near future because all of them won't be switching.

I use xmpp for me and my family for communication. And Wuala, Jotta, Bittorrent Sync or Syncthing for file transfer.

I have an account on Jabber.se, but you can make one on another server (DuckDuckGo, Jitsi, etc.).

I did. After Skype started acting out with a their routers and overheating their laptops. Switching to Vsee was easy. It's so much easier on the CPU and works much better at lower internet speeds.

I use XP and Skype 4.2 and today i got a message that Skype does not support XP. Adding the above adress to my hosts file doesn't seem to work. Is there any solution?

I now use version 3.80 for Windows.I first installed version 5.x,logged on it.After that I turned it off, uninstalled, and after that installed Skype 3.80 which is working well.I think that is the last version which can works after "patching".

I'm using version 3.0.0.19. I don't know if my "patch" will work for later versions. I've tried it with, I believe, up to 3.2. I get a message that I needed to upgrade for security reasons if I run this version without it. I found ui.skype.com by inspecting the logs of my firewall and checking where skype was communicating to after I got the security message. I just use skype as a cheap phone service and I'm not interested in anything they've added to the new versions. I also like to keep copies of voicemails on my own computer and this version does that well.
