We all know how that works. Take away 10 or more jobs and adding only 1.

I wonder how many of the new hires will be technical consultants. Tech consultants are not counted in the employment figures of a company, so 18,000 out the door and zero in makes for leaner operations. Proven technical experience at a moments notice appeals to companies like MS that are in restructuring mode. They stated that they will be both hiring and firing.

A full time employee is considered less of a prudent investment these days and the tech industry have a lot of freelance contractors. Some companies see this as an opportunity to address a toxic environment - the new blood can perform the required job without mentoring and will therefore not be subject to company culture grooming. There are advantages and disadvantages on both sides. The tech consultant gets to put a value on their skill set and can state what deliverables they want to be responsible for. Scope creep requires a contract amendment and increased compensation. Companies warm to these hires as they commit to a term contract, a defined scope of work, a specific salary, no benefits or pensions, non-union worker and their stated experience and accomplishments can be checked. Unfortunately new grads and those currently looking for full time employment are up against this paradigm. Management look good when they get to manage things rather than people.

Sad for all those without a job, hopefully they will find a new home quickly. The Finnish employees might want to look into getting a job with Jolla.

That is a lot of verbage about not much. I doubt if share holders and the board but a whole lot of stock in those numbers.

Keeping in mind why this thread was started - to downplay numbers takes away from the overall thrust of the thread, that what MS did set a new high bar for how low a Corporation will go with job cuts and leave the executives pockets loaded with cash bonuses, private jets and stocks options in the Billions.

Chromebooks sales predicted to hit 14.2 million by 2017. Will this wake Nadella up?
