I'll be happy when it's unsupported on any OS. Like XP, its time has passed.

 

I just hope those still on XP for whatever reason will also disable it from their web browser: https://www.java.com/en/download/help/disable_browser.xml

It's time has passed as a browser plugin (just like Adobe's stuff as well). They still have valid uses outside the web browsers though.

 

Already disable browser plugin on XP.

The problem is that if someone stop using Java, he can't use anymore all those applications which they need the Java in order to operate .......

i.e. my web bank needs java, so what is the alternative? To change bank just because the java?

 

Hell I would. If your bank is relying on a plugin that is now world renowned for being dangerous to operate its extremely sensitive online banking site, do you really want to trust them with your financial future? Changing banks may be a pain in the behind, but it's a hell of a lot better than getting your bank account owned because of a stupid, no longer needed plugin. It's your cash, you're free to do as you please.

Agreed, but even better... I wouldn't do online banking at all in the first place. I'll take the time to go there in person. Guess I'm just old school like that.

As for Java... don't use it, don't need it for anything I run on my box. Not Just Another Virus, but just a bunch of vulnerable attack surface to invite it in.

Lots of people stopped using Windows for that very reason. Unfortunately, Linux is no longer exempt from malware and criminals out to get data and cash either. Besides, using Windows because of its flaws and using something as serious as online banking that forces a dangerous plugin is a bit different. You use Windows because it's the most convenient and most supported OS. That bank of yours uses Java because they are either lazy and don't care or, worse, they have no idea how dangerous that plugin is or how at risk their website is.

You can also lock the Java plugin down to only activate when you want it to depending on your browser and extensions, such as Firefox's "Ask to Activate" http://www.trishtech.com/2014/06/ask-to-activate-plugins-in-firefox/
Assuming you might even know bout it, but also just commenting in case anyone else is still dependent on the Java plugin for whatever reason. There's ways to lock it down to be more than safe enough is my point.

Can't use Project Management software.

The ones I've looked at (Estimator, ProjectLibre) rely on Java...

- still, I would rather go without then use Java.
