I have been looking to buy a tablet for sometime now and my budget is around 12000 INR ($200). The main purpose of this will be to read books, edit documents, basic web browsing and occasional movie watching. I am not a gamer, so I dont need much CPU/GPU. Camera isnt of much priority to me, I might use it sometimes but its not like I would be using it everyday to video chat. I am looking to something with the following in mind:

    - Clear and sharp text, I will be reading for hours on this
    - Wifi, 3G, Bluetooth and USB
    - Voice call with decent sound quality
    - Does not generate much heat during usage
    - Not much of custom apps installed, I am not planning to root the device and would prefer if there's not many bloated apps are installed
    - Sturdy, something that would last for a few years

I have found Lenovo Idea Tab A1000 (Though there's no 3G), Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Neo and Asus Fonepad 7 Dual SIM in my range. Also I am concerned a bit that some of the tablets I can find does not have removable battery. I seem to like fonepad as it has much more ppi (216) as opposed to galaxy having 170.

    Folks, any suggestions? :isay:

Youve pidgeon holed yourself into a corner. You wont find much if anything that has 3G and bloated apps without rooting.

The closest thing you will find to $200 is the KindleFireHDX. 16Gb with either ATT or Verizon 4G LTE and thats almost double your price.

At this price it,s hard to get all these features esp 3G and Voice call. Asus Fonepad (7 or 8?) seems the only option but I have not seen it thoroughly so far. Another option is HUAWEI MediaPad 7 youth.

Cheap tablets usually have terrible displays. I was looking to buy one for my kid but after seeing the displays of these tablets( price range $ 50 to 100), I decided not to but one because display quality was so terrible that one will hate to use them.

Next two areas where cheaper tablets usually suffer are battery life and poor speakers.

Personally I feel 7 inch tablets are too small. I like a lot 8 inch size tablets. I bought a Lenovo Miix 2 8( with windows 8.1) and I am happy with it. I will suggest to get some hands-on experience on that tablet toy want to buy in some good store esp its Screen and voice.

Out of the 7 and 8 inch tablets that I have seen so far: LG G pad seems good( now has 8 inch version too).

Have a look on HUAWEI MediaPad M1 and X1( 8 n 7 inch)- I have not seen them yet but both have voice call. They are about to launch here. Also Dell Venue 7 and 8 android tabs and may be Lenovo S5000 may be worth looking.

I am from India, so it doesnt apply to me.

Voice call isnt a priority to me, just like an added bonus. Asus fonepad 7 seems to be the best choice I have, also its currently on Android 4.3 while most of the others are on 4.2 branch. HUAWEI MediaPad 7 youth is not available here yet, though the previous Mediapad Lite is available, but its almost same same price with fonepad. I have checked Dell Venue (both 7 and 8 ) and they look promising. The only problem is they dont provide warranty anywhere nearby, only in a few select cities. Other than that, it would have been fine. I have also checked some of the Acer Iconia and they look good too.

And I agree most of the cheaper tablets have horrible displays. There are tablets available here from $55 and I can get cheap re-branded Chinese models but the after-sales service is practically non-existent and the back plastic panels are really weak.

I personally seem to like the fonepad (ME175CG) because it seems to have good backup, it shows 720 hours standby time and 10 hours Video Playback. Also it has Miracast and 10 finger multi-touch support. Speakers are not bad too.

If you go for fonepad, why not fonepad 8 rather than 7.
