Some pc aid to my parents :)

I need to create a mom and dad pc. It is their first pc,( they're in the sixties). The reason is that all correspondence from the state to its citizens, here in Denmark, wil be online only, later this year. I have bought a laptop with windows 8.1 64 bit, of course , with a 17 inch screen, due to it will be easier for the eyes. What I really need is a second opinion about my thoughts regarding the security. They will only use this pc to go banking online and correspondence with the state. Avira free due to its good signatures. ( I'm a Emsisoft man myself, but have second thoughts about, that the behavior blocker could be to much for them to handle, if it pop up) They don't need to download anything, so I have chosen Sandboxie, as a zero day tool for the browser. The browser will be Firefox 29.1 with the ad blocker, bluhell firewall. The firewall will be windows own firewall. I have only good things to say about windows firewall, so that choices is just based on my own experience. The backup will be , Paragon backup free 2014. The maintenance of the Pc will be with help from Teamviewer, and me. A piece of software that I have not used before. But I have it installed on a test computer and my own pc. And so far it seems okay to handle. Have I forgot anything? My goal was to create a more secure pc, but at the same time easy to handle security.

 

My mother is one decade younger and I only have a firewall to protect her PC. If it happens something she usually calls me and I remote the PC, but I never had problems with viruses. In my opinion the king of protection on the web is adblock. I also bookmark important webpages.

 

I must admit that I'm too much a sissy to only run with a firewall, on my parents pc, even though I probably could handle most issue remotely. To be honest then I am only concerned about one group of malware, and that is exploits. But an updated machine should take care of this issue, or minimize the risk, more or less. But I am with you 100 percent that the king of protection on the web is adblock, no doubt. The idea to bookmark the most commonly web pages is also a good idea. Thanks for your input Wroll =)

 

Sandboxie is a great choice, dont forget to set it to delete upon closing and delete the ie/ff icons from the desktop so that Sandboxie will be be the only way onto
the internet.

Bitdefender Free is an option worth considering as soon as you register it with an email account it`s pretty much set and forget.

Avira`s a good option though all you may need is on demand MBAM and or HMP(which you can run when visiting).

Sandboxie on top windows own onboard security should be suffice imo.

Yeap , I will keep Sandboxie, and just let the sandboxie icon be as a only option on the desktop

Bitdefender signatures has for a very long time been among the best, so "Bitdefender free" could be an alternative to Avira. I just have to try it out first.

I relly loved windows firewall. It is basic a firewall, but it do its job so well. There was a period, where I just used different security suites, with integrated firewalls. And most often, gave those firewalls me a lot of problems, so i dumped them. Never have had any problems since. Thanks for your suggestions Eck..

I use Emet myself version 5.3tp, and yes it is a great mitigation tool . It could be that I will add it later. But first I will try out my setup, to see how it will behave, before I give the computer back to my parents.

 

You could also perhaps look into anti-executable protection.

 

Do you mean e.g. Appguard from blue ridge? I have been lurking at the Appguard thread, here at Wilders. It looks promising, and I like its approach to security. But that most be somthing than I will try out, on the other side of this summer. I have to work on my tan this summer

Maybe something like Unchecky that automatically tries to uncheck bundleware in installers. But that is a good 80% or more of what I end up cleaning on machines- junk that has gotten installed through unchecked things bundled with other software. OR fake "Download now" links (which Adblock takes care of nicely).

If they'll be using Firefox then just lock it down good- Make sure Java isn't enabled in the browser. https://browsercheck.qualys.com/ works nice to make sure everything is updated.
Extensions I usually include for people are Adblock, HTTPS Everywhere, and maybe Privacy Badger (but it's in Alpha for now). I wouldn't include Noscript unless they actually want to learn it.

The main thing is just locking the browser down and having them avoid shady downloads (usually from ads).

 

I would install sbie, ERP and adguard extension and they should be well protected.

 

Thanks for all the good suggestions and advices. The final setup was a Firefox browser 29.1 with private browsing permanently enabled, and with adblock plus. Java is set to always ask. The browser became sandboxed by Sandboxie, only leaving the sandbox icon on the desktop. Bitdefender free was installed, due to its simplicity, and its stabil and good signatures (like Avira's). Unchecky, because it is a lovely tool, that just works. A backup was made by Paragon backup free edition. Teamviewer is working perfectly, and was actually quite easy to figure out. Through teamviewer I will take care of maintenance, meaning patching the system . Oh, and I have bookmarked those pages that my parents will use more or less, and I kept windows own firewall. (I love that firewall)
