It will by an Acer C710. Here is what I am checking: Screen, Sound, chrome://system, WiFi, USB ports, Battery, Bluetooth, Webcam/Mic, Audio jack, Factory reset Anything else to add? I'll try documenting my experience with it later.
Got it a few hours ago, hardware didn't have any issues I can detect. The seller even explained things I didn't ask for, which is good. First hiccup was keyboard input language. I chose English US, but it gives me Canada French automatically instead.Logging in was a problem, couldn't find out how to type @ without the on-screen keyboard, which took me a while to figure out how to close. I cannot switch to the proper one without syncing my account and manually adding English US. Another issue is anti-theft. Does anyone know of freeware for that? Plus I can't watch some subtitles embedded in the video, or switch languages/subs. Wish there was VLC for that, but I'll have to convert after all. Overall, despite some minor quirks, I'm liking the speed (for its limited hardware), convenience, and security of this machine. Much smoother than the Acer Aspire One netbook I had, even after doubling the RAM.
Does anyone know whether a Chromebook would automatically sleep if I leave a download or torrent running? Seems to detect disk activity and didn't suspend when I left a download running. JSTorrent also has a setting for that. Did suspend while listening to music on Grooveshark though. Is there a way to turn off the screen without waiting for power manager or suspending the computer? Found out you can do that by setting brightness all the way down.
Maybe if it was my main machine... I like to keep the using mainly Chrome OS on that machine for convenience, speed, and security. Haven't really found the need for Crouton, ChrUbuntu, or anything like that yet.
Actually, I just installed Xfce Trusty Crouton, and it works pretty well overall. Too bad I had to start all over just to switch to developer mode. At least Chrome sync made it easier. I do want to try booting Linux Mint 17 off a flash drive later. Anyhow, is the NetSurf browser installed by default buggy or something? I can't even save an image, only a folder with its name. Had to use wget to download a new wallpaper. Yes, I could've switched to ChromeOS, but wanted to see how well Crouton works. Everything else seemed fine, except I had an instance where bluetooth mouse stayed disconnected for a while and tapping touchpad didn't work until I reboot.
Okay, I tried everything but flashing the firmware and editing the kernel to boot from the USB, which is the reason I decided to try developer mode in the first place. There's always a blank screen beep then it returns to the OS verification off screen. I decided that it was too risky and developer mode may not be that useful after all. That is unless someone instructs me on how to remap the useless < key next to my left shift.
So you find Google Chrome, Linux, and a perfectly capable ARM/x86 machine kind of useless? Indeed, what use are (Windows) computers in the grand scheme of things?
Hahahaha well what i really meant is that Chrome OS is useless IMO. All you can do is use a bunch of Google services/features and that's it. That's kind of limited considering you have to lug around a full size laptop (And its accesories) and other things such as battery life isnt that great either.
Limited isn't the proper word here, how can efficiently and securely doing 90+% of what people use a computer for every day be useless? You can't deny the convenience here, especially as a secondary device. That is where you're also incorrect, Developer Mode basically gives you access to the root Linux terminal where you can do things like install Ubuntu. Even without it you can't ignore third-party apps/extensions like JSTorrent and HTTP Switchboard. My laptop is far from full-sized, it's 11.6 inches. Only accessories I carry is the charger and my bluetooth mouse. Battery life could be better, but few laptops excel in that anyhow (and nothing to do with Chrome OS in the first place).
Here's something a bit different in Chromebooks, to load photos from your camera, take out the SD card and install it in the memory card slot on your Chromebook, click the "files" app on the menu to download and sort. My Nikon would not download via a USB cable.
By USB cable, I presume that means directly connected to the (some?) camera instead of a memory card reader. Well it doesn't have Windows-level of drivers support, but I don't see how it's really inconvenient taking out the SD card. I should try my Android and iOS devices, although it's usually WiFi file sharing for me.
Yeah, it's not a big deal, just different from Windows. They made sure you can upload them into Google Drive from the same "files" app.
How would I test upgraded RAM without Developer Mode? Even with that Ctrl+U doesn't work last time I tried.
