XP to Windows 7 or 8

Is 7 the superior OS, or go 8 because it's newer and will be relevant longer? I have 32 bit. Thank you in advance.

 

Probably best sticking with win7 or waiting for win 9 in april?
Win 8 seems to have been the least popular version of windows for a long time, even slower uptake than vista.

I still use xp 32bit dual booting with win7 64bit

After XP I naturally migrated to W7. Never gave W8 a second or a third thought.

Well, at this point Windows 7's EOL is less than 6 years away if the dates hold. If you're planning on using it longer you might want to get 8.

 

How did the transfer to 64bit go?

 

I seriously tried 8. Did the common tweaks, installed Classic Shell & played around with it. The other parts of the DE (Desktop Environment) probably related to Metro kept getting in my way. If I could switch DEs & leave the core alone I would probably like 8. In fact on my Lenovo G780 i5 3rd 16GB 120GB SSD I felt 8 to be quicker than 7. But 8s DE is ime junk. I wouldn't be surprised if W9 was 8 underneath the hood with a new DE, hopefully like W7.

What parts annoyed you? You don't have to see Metro at all if you don't want to.

same here, on MY systems , default win8.1.1 (not optimized or tweaked) run and boot faster than default Win7 ; especially due to hybrid boot (which Win7 lack)

now about eaesthetic, it depends people and usage of metro apps or not. Personally i need some apps so win8.1.1 is perfect to me.

by corruptions, what they means? broken MBR/GPT, bad sectors, corrupted clusters? and in which scenario/circumstances?

 

I recall one thread where someone created a cold image while offline and copied some files to a partition. Then shutdown. When the computer restarted, the image and the files weren't present. I think they were recovered with a chkdsk /f. I have Fast Start disabled on all my Win8 computers so I haven't done any testing.

 

I would go to W7 on a new custom desktop, but only if I could find retail version of 'ultimate'. However, I can't find one!

 

I agree with tarnak, I would go with Windows 7, which would be a wise upgrade from Windows XP, it's just a more robust operating system,to speak nothing of the fact the XP has reached end of life.
I didn't like 8 on account of the metro interface .

 

What benefits are there for Ultimate compared to Pro? I know Ultimate has flexible language support and encryption capabilities.
Oh, "more secure" Software Restriction Policy also but not sure if it makes a difference in the real world.

I think Win 8 is the best OS so far in my experience. I also think Win 7 is also great, but if I were to upgrade from XP, I would certainly go for Win 8 as Win 9 will certainly be more like Win 8 than Win 7...

8.1X for sure. I would entirely skip 7. 8 is generally faster, lighter, and not subject to crashes, lockups, or funky issues. No reason NOT to run it. 8.1x is like a free hardware upgrade to most reasonable machines as well. I haven't seen the Metro interface on any of my Win 8.1x machines since their installation. It's entirely avoidable.

 

Win 8.1 is as good as Win 7. There are no visible speed, performance or stability differences between them (regardless of what some people try to imply without any evidence whatsoever) so you can go either way.
