So I have upgraded to 8.1. Took me over 10 hours until the upgrading process was finished aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

But that's not the problem. What annoyed me so much is it changed so many settings so that I had to do hunt n' fix which consumed even more time. Well, fine if it just changed trivial settings, but the DEP setting was also changed. That means I'll have to review my fine-tuned configurations very carefully which I did for security purpose. Good thing is I have retired from manually playing with the registry. It'd be even more painful if I have to take care of those as well.

Here comes the worst part, Windows Defender became a zombie and it won't die no matter what I did. It showed that it has been already disabled, but when I downloaded a file it said "Anti-virus software failed unexpectedly while scanning this file" and my download got cancelled. The services are greyed-out so I couldn't set them to disabled. As for now I still don't know how to disable the damn thing. The fix in Eight Forums didn't work. I might be missing something in one of the threads here but I couldn't find an easy alternative way to fix this. Mrkvonic suggested to boot from a Linux live CD and renaming the folder, but as I said, I can't download anything. Anyone got an idea? Thanks.

    GrafZeppelin,

Something went wrong. Mine took 15 minutes. Can you restore a Win8 image taken prior to the 8.1 update?

My internet connection is slow. Over 8 hours of it was just to download the upgrade. The rest was the installation process.

I was being a derp and deleted the image I created before doing the upgrade. I was about to create an image after this upgrade, but just noticed the Defender issue this morning. I still have the barebone image of 8.0 though, but I haven't doing Windows update for quite some time so I might need to see when I have the time to do that. My fault, I know. I'm just kind of busy these last.

    OK.

I'm on Win8.1 Update 1 and no problems.

There is one potential problem I've noticed in the four computers I've updated to Update 1. If you do a Disk Cleanup/System Files and delete the Windows Update files you corrupt the Component Store and Windows Update will no longer work. The Store can't be repaired. This didn't happen prior to Update 1. I had to restore images taken prior to Disk Cleanup. So, don't do a Disk Cleanup/System Files and delete the Windows Update files after installing Update 1.

USA still the best. But barely.
Maybe it's just me. But I think Vista & the honest attempt to fix 8 with 8.1 are hindered. And here is where I go off the rails.

I think 8.1 is hindered & fubared because the best, bright & just a lot of the bodies at MS are working on NSA projects/exploits when these editions were made. So it's just a skeleton crew & a couple janitors producing this muck.

And I apologize to any janitors I might've offended.

Windows 8.1x shouldn't take over 15 minutes to install, or upgrade, regardless of the hardware. Even on my wifes old dual core laptop it only took 15 minutes for it all to finish. Something when deadly wrong if it took 10 hours. I'd format, and fresh install.

    DoctorPC,

GrafZeppelin has a slow internet speed. Eight hours was taken up by the download. I assume you upgraded from an ISO, as I did.

But still, "Something when deadly wrong".

I tried to disable Defender through regedit, but got an access denied error thingy. I heard it requires ownership take-over. Then I remembered that there's an option to disable it in gpedit. Anyway, when the easy way didn't work, try this:

Gpedit.msc --> Local Computer Policy --> Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Windows Defender --> Turn off Windows Defender = Enabled

What an unnecessary over-complication just to turn off an AV.

    Thanks for the suggestion...

...but I already have done it. WU seems to be working just fine though.

Just curious, do you guys have the lock screen displayed as the rainbow one for like a second or so in the first boot, then changed to the lock screen of your choice? Or got graphical glitches like this?

Does Windows Defender turn off automatically when another AV is installed?

Afaik Yes, under Win8 and later it is supposed to get disabled automatically when a 3'rd party AV product is installed.

Installing MalwareBytes doesn't disable Windows Defender. Win8/Win8.1.

Hmm...I assume that could be because Malwarebytes is not seen as an AV product :doubt:

Installing ESET disables Windows Defender on Windows 8.1.

the free version is on-demand only, unlike Windows Defender or MBAM Premium.

Yes I know, but it's still Malwarebytes.

I dunno, I don't use AV. But if I have to install another AV just to turn Defender off then that's just plain silly.

    To disable Defender...

In Defender, Settings, remove the tick from "Turn on real-time...."

It somehow didn't work for me. I already have done that and when I opened the GUI via CP, it also said it's been disabled. I don't remember if it was running in the background though, but the download failure indicated that it was not totally disabled. So far the gpedit method works, glad that I bought the Pro version. :p

I think there is an Admin tab where you can disable the thing.
    look around at the settings.
I've disabled it a long time ago so i'm not sure where exactly it is, but it's there. ;)

I have disabled it both in the first tab (don't remember what it was called) and the admin tab. In 8.0 I also disabled it through services.msc, now in 8.1 it can't be done anymore.

BTW, what about the graphical glitch or start screen bug? Anybody else experienced it too?

Just curious... how come? I'm on 8.1u1 and I can clearly disable it through services.

    windef.png

EDIT: My bad, the service is there but it can't be fully manipulated. Well, I guess if you disable it though the Defender GUI it just stays on manual and doesn't start...

EDIT2: I have not experienced any glitches like the one in the screenshot (yet, which doesn't mean that i won't) and can't comment on lock screen issue as I see the lock screen only when my PC becomes idle (I don't use a password, whoa!, so I boot straight ot desktop), and there are no glitches there.
