I'm truly amazed. That is the first time in many, many months without errors and having to search the issue or attempt the installs over a couple days. I'm a happy camper today!

While I am glad you had flawless Win updates I am surprised it was just an exception for you. Having Vista installed for already a couple of years I never had an issue every second Tuesday in a month. Probably Vista is less prone to update bugs.

I don't think that flawless updates are something exceptional for Windows 7. I've updated a lot of W7 systems (32 and 64 bit) and have almost never come across update problems.

Then the issues with Win updates the OP has encountered stem from some specifics of his/her machine.

Only ever once had issues with updates on Windows 7, and that was on an old Dell laptop.

Vista (for me) was continually prone to Windows update errors.

The only time I have had problems with Windows Update was once with Windows 8 shortly after its release due to a conflict with an antipiracy component included with some 3rd party software and a couple of times in the early days of Windows 7 when the security suite I was running at the time was interfering with the updates.

The only problem I have with Windows update is when I install updates on a fresh Windows copy without or with at least one generation older service pack. It tells you have updates, I download and install those updates, reboot and I get again a message that there are updates to install. Always annoying. I can't believe that they haven't fixed this problem yet at Microsoft.
