I just upgraded to a different Android SmartPhone recently. On my old SmartPhone I would routinely get phone calls with nothing being heard on the other end if the call was answered. A Reverse Lookup of the phone number(s) would always say: Level 3 Communications VoIP in Kingsville, TX On my new SmartPhone I got a call today and when I answered it there was silence on the other end. I immediatlely hung up on the call. A Reverse Lookup showed the same thing: Level 3 Communications VoIP in Kingsville, TX Has anyone in this forum been getting phone calls like this? Could this type of call be Malicious (NSA installing code on my Android SmartPhone when I answer it)? Thanks in Advance.
Could? Anything "Could" Although I don't think even NSA can install malware via the voice channel. As sure as can be that it isn't NSA without saying 100% (as in 99.9999999999999999~), good bet Did you get a new SIM (as in phone number)? Did that number pop up in any of the "who is calling me" telemarketer databases? Block it and be done with it.
No. I moved the old SIM to the new phone. There was no phone number change. No. There was not indication of who was calling. I added the phone number to the Call Rejection List.
I'm reminded of that scene in "Ghost in the Shell", where a woman has her brain pwned after answering the telephone
This type of call has happened to me. A few months ago, probably when it started with you OP, I received a call from Virginia, twice in a row around 8pm, about ten minutes apart. No sound upon answering, just a disconnect. Calling the number and a recorded message saying the party is unavailable and will be notified (in a nutshell). I would get a call every other day or so from the same number with the same results. My reverse lookup was VoIP Level 3 Communications. I blocked the number online with my carrier. I switched to a different carrier (for an unrelated reason) with the same number. Now it happened again from Mississippi. Two calls tonight. VoIP Level 3 Communications. Ugh. Unfortunately I am using prepaid and don't have a block feature. A look at Android apps and apparently none of the call blocker apps are effective or even work. Anyways if anyone else experiences this, it would be helpful to hear about it.
I'm on a prepaid plan with T-Mobile, so I've been relying on Google Voice to place VoIP calls predominately. It's been extremely effective in managing unwanted calls. But to answer your question, I have been receiving unwanted VoIP and other calls from (800) numbers. I've been checking the play store call blocking apps, including: call control, call filter, and blacklist. But I've refrained from installing these apps due to permissions. I can't speak for how effective these ares, but I did have my eye on call control and blacklist in particular since they have the option to block calls for all numbers not in your contacts list. SMS blocking hasn't been necessary yet, but I did note they were having compatibility issues with KitKat. Thanks for sharing the 800notes sites. I've done several reverse look-ups with little success. Turns out the calls are related to student loans.
I just got a strange call from one of these things too. The call was super strange so I reverse phone searched it, finding out it was from something that's called "Level3 voIP" which I plan to do more research on.
Sadly, I think this stuff is likely telemarketing, and this particular pattern is where they are establishing whether the contact is valid and answered. Worth more then.
Hello all - I stumbled into your forum after googling "Level 3 /VoIP" phone lines. I'm running into one in the course of attempting to contact a (supposed)rental agency while trying to lease a house. First number disconnected, second number's message had an odd British accent. Both numbers were out of Texas. After reading your comments, am I correct in assuming that the ad for the rental is probably some sort of scam? Thanks for any input. Teddy
