View Full Version : Which software firewall do you think you will be running one year from now?

With the apparent demise of the Kerio and Sygate firewalls, I was curious to see which software firewall people think they will be running one year from now.
I know we don't know what other firewalls may disappear, what new firewalls may appear, or what changes to Windows or other software during the next year may necessitate a change in firewalls but I'd like to know:
What software firewall do you think you will be running one year from now?

Hopefully Kaspersky Anti-Hacker

I use NIS it does everything I would want a software firewall to do. ;)

Was using NIS too, and it's firewall is actually a good one: did hesitate to buy the firewall only for next year, ( with another av ) but I've tried Outpost, among others, ...and that's THE one to go for !! :) - still rate Norton's one as 2nd choice.

Filseclab for me...great freebie!

Filseclab's firewall. Until ZoneLab's does something about the freezes/crashes in ZoneAlarm, I'll be sticking with Filseclab's. ;D

I voted for ZoneAlarm Free, because it's free. I don't pay for firewalls with pros and cons.
If they know the cons so well, why don't they fix them..
If a certain con of firewall-A is a pro in firewall-B, why don't they fix firewall-A ?
I never get the RIGHT answers to my questions, always excuses and non-solving explanations.

I voted ZA cuz it only screwed up once since it first came out back in the 90`s on my machine. Sure there was bugs here and there but you`ll find that in all software. IMO

My vote goes to ZoneAlarm, because I've been using it for years...and with my little computer knowledge..it's easy and a breeze to have !
Cheers, ;D

Outpost is indeed one of the very best Firewalls and even useful for less-knowledgeable users because of the pre-defined rules, which makes Outpost ready for use. Creating rules requires more knowledge of course.
Unfortunately it's not freeware. :(

Netveda--I just tested it at Shields up, grc, pc flank and Sygate and it passed all with flying colors right out of box. The only adjustment I made was to block referrers and that was easy to do.

Netveda for me too. I have been using Look´n´stop but it (GUI) was a bit too complicated for me, never fully understood the process of making (advanced) rules.
Stumbled on the free Netveda wich I have been testing for the last month. It seems to be a firewall in my taste. The tightening of rules was fairly simple to comprehend. Just wish it would tell when SPI blocks something.
Would love to run Filesec after all the praise I heard about it, but it messed up my computer. Probably something in my config, but I dont have the time to trace it now, but I will probably try it again later on.

:) My vote went to Zone Alarm as well. I just had to install it and forget about it. As far as I can tell it is doing it's thing, and I don't have to mess with it, for me that works.
Thanks

probably be using what i'm using now kerio 2.1.5 - it's free - it's cute - it's passed all tests so far - it works out of the box (for me) - it's light on resource - will give me the opportunity to learn about rule based firewalls using Rmus's tutorial - keeps me entertained with messages like this...Someone from 81-179-125-218.dsl.pipex.com [81.179.125.218], port 62623 wants to send UDP datagram to port 2297 owned by 'Firefox' on your computer. ;D

Tiny Firewall 6.5 Pro.
It was hard to configure. It is now running well on my computer, and it will continue to be there.

I voted "Other"...with other being a router with NAT.
Also at times I multihome my SBS2K3 server and use ISA2004 until I run into some online game I get into which won't work through it.

I voted kerio 2.1.5. However, I'm currently using jetico and really like it. I really don't know:) I may be purchasing a new computer soon. And a year from now is a long time.
If I purchase a new computer, which will be more powerful, my choices will probably go like this.
#1 kerio 2.1.5
#2 Jetico
#3 Zonealarm free or pro ( zonealarm is no longer windows me compatible)
Then there's all the rest. :)

Most of them would be around, ZA and CHX for sure.

Forgot about CHX. I'll probably try out a lot of firewalls. and then make a choice. That is if I get a new computer. If not...It's kerio 2.1.5 or jetico. Those 2 run best on my current computer.

CHX is inbound but runs quite well with Kerio 2.15 so you get best of both.

I'd like to think I'd be using the new improved firewall that's part of Kaspersky Internet Security 2006. By all accounts, it's very different to the current Kaspersky Anti-Hacker.

Right now I am content with ZAPro version 5.5 since 6 from all acounts (and my other computers) uses a bit more resources than this version. Overall I like it, it does its job, and is very easy to configure.
I've also tried and loved Kerio (once paid for it), but as the first post mentions, it's going to be gone.
I've tried Outpost, and it must have been how I configured it, but I really didn't like all that much.
Sygate was an excellent firewall, but again, it's leaving us.
I'm going to try Jetico and Netveda as I see that they get much praise.

i have been using za for the longest time. starting this past summer... i was getting freezes once or twice a week. i never get bsod. so after a long while i had time to isolate the problem- it was ZA pro. i went back a version- but it was too late.
so now i am looking at outlook pro and voted for it. however- i am so impressed with kaspersky anti virus and its quality-- that i may use its anti hacker instead.

I am currently using 8Signs Firewall behind a Linksys router. I am not aware of any reason(s) why I might reaccess this setup a year from now.
