Uh, this is ICF or XP pre SP2 so you may want to change your title. :)

I believe SP2 Windows Firewall (WF) has addressed two of the article cons:
1. Granularity of port selection/exceptions that break applications
2. UPnP in a LUA

It has not addressed:
1. Outbound protection lacking
2. Real-time notification of 'attacks'

hi Mem1 - thanks for the correction - now i'm a little confused - i thought there was no firewall option prior to XP2 ??? (obviously a misapprehension)

(won't let me change title on the main index - so it will have to stay as it is) ;D

The RTM of XP and later SP1 had Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), which was upgraded to Windows Firewall (WF) in SP2.

Older Windows versions (W2K) had TCP/IP and IP security in the network interface, although it was very uncomfortable to configure this 'firewall' function, hidden by some 'advanced' buttons.
