Free F-PROT for DOS questions

The F-PROT for DOS is free but i have some questions about :

1. How good is it ?
2. It works with XP ?
3. If i have installed other AV program can i use it as ''on demand'' scanner ?

1) Its detection ratios are (well should be) as good as the F-Prot for windows. Check out sites like VBulliten and Av-Comparatives.

2) Frisk say it doesnt, but i've had no problems using it on windows xp with NTFS formatted partitions.

for winxp i suggest you to use fpcmd, which works better under XP. In is included in the Win package (you get it also when installing the trial I think).

No problems using it--but it has difficulty removing malware from NTFS partitions.

The main problem with using the free DOS version is that it can't properly read long directory and file names, so it wont scan and clean all the likely places where viruses hide on a typical WinXP system. Not much point IMHO having a scanner that can only scan half your disk. There are better free scanners designed specifically for Windows.

For a backup on demand scanner that won't interfere with your main AV, try BitDefender Free edition.

Yes, as Ned stated, F-Prot for DOS cannot read many of the files on an NTFS system, even if you enable support for short filenames. Therefore you cannot make a full scan without some sort of external help.

But I thought you were happy with Dr Web's CureIT (http://download.drweb.com/drweb+antivirus+free+services/#0) as a backup scanner?
