Despite all the security software I've bought and downloaded, it seems I'm infected. *I am bitterly disappointed. *AdAware and SpyBotSD, TDS and TTT don't find the infections. *I've got something from:
Akamai or akamaitechnologies
download.windows.com
sa.windows.com
Does anyone know these?
Harrumph. * :'(

Checkout,
Before going into this:
What program did detect, and do you have a log file?
regards.

Checkout.. I can help out, just let me know what's going on by answering Paul's questions. *If need be (as I've done with others in the past), we can install VNC on your system so I can securely come into your system over the Net. *
Let me know.

I used TCPView - and I'm definitely going to buy this beauty! *It's sort of a bigger brother to TDImon, I believe.
At the time, no, I didn't have sufficient functioning braincells to save the log. *However, I took one this morning but it might not have Akamai in there - though it does have free2surf entries. *I also recorded the process log from Tiny's Trojan Trap, which looks kind of interesting.
All help much appreciated.

Hey, Blaze - get rid of your porn! *It's affecting your spelling! * ;D
BTW, I used TCPview, which has a 14 day trial, and is excellent. *Very informative.

Thanks, Paul. *I'm definitely interested. *Akamai does not appear to be on the side of the angels.

Hi Checkout,
To give you an idea about Akamai:
A lot of the Akamai sites are included in the HOSTS file from S.Martin, but to block every Akamai site might give problems. On the following page you see a list of urls that might give problems if you block them:
http://www.smartin-designs.com/prob.htm.
So his HOSTS file comes with a section "not for everyone".
To give an example:
Sometimes the URL-security-update-for-parental-control for NIS has to be downloaded via an Akamai site (even when you use Norton LiveUpdate). That means: if you have blocked every Akamai site, you cannot download it.

Thanks for the info, Fanj. *Sounds as if I can safely block this one since I don't need parental controls and I don't run Norton. * :)

;D
But that update for the parental-control in NIS was only an example.
To give an analogy, this time for IE-Spy-Ad:
if my memory doesn't fail me:
in IE-Spy-AD (not the latest one, at this moment I haven't installed it yet; I still have to do that) was a line with an url to Digital-River; that url wasn't "enabled" by default. I myself did it. Sometime later I wanted to buy some program, it had to be done through Digital-River. Well, I couldn't. It took me awhile before I discovered what the reason was, and then I made the correction and everything went OK.

When I discovered that akamaitech was keeping live connections even after I had closed my browser, I blocked them with my proxy (proxomitron). Turns out the American mirror for AVG updates uses an akamaitech server. Took me months to figure why I had to use a Czech server.

Now that's useful information! *I use AVG too!
Thanks, Mike!

I know this is a little dated (2000) but I still find this fascinating about the Akamai process. At the time this was written it was merely a theory from a computer science prof at the University of Washington, I believe it has since been shown he was right on the money.

Sad sidenote: The co-founder of Akamai was killed when the jet he was travelling on slammed into the World Trade Center on 9/11.

That's pretty sad indeed. *I wouldn't have wished that on anybody.
