Hello;
New at this and a relative computer idiot so be patient.
Have installed and updated both Spyware Blaster and Spybot S&D. Still getting pop-ups from slotch.com almost every time I get on internet. What gives?

The two products you've named are not specifically pop-up killers. SpywareBlaster protects your PC from some forms of spyware (perhaps most importantly what's called "drive by downloads" using ActiveX), and also it prevents many spyware based cookies, as well. Spybot S&D is mainly a spyware cleaning tool, though it also has some proactive protections in it.

Perhaps if you can explain exactly what these pop-ups look like we could determine what type of protection you need to prevent them. If you could post an image of one, also, that would be great. (I went to the slotch.com but since I don't get any pop-ups because of my settings, I didn't see anything specific.)

Based upon where I think this thread might end up going, I'm going to move it the the "privacy problems" forum section after I post this.

If that and installing a popupkiller don't solve it:
Please go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/, and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log as a .txt file, and copy and paste its contents into your next post.

Most of what it lists will be harmless, so do not fix anything yet.

I'm really curious why this misconception occurs, i.e sptbot /adaware etc can be used as popup blockers.

Sure, sometimes, popups are a direct effect of spyware /adware installed but isnt it more common for popups to orginate for the web page itself or even result of messanger spam?

Actually i suspect why this is so.
there is a canned reply going around on various forums and usenet forums from one of our members.

Here's a sample.

" Popups - The best way to start is to get Ad-Aware 5.83 and the

here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com. Update and run this regularly to get
rid of most "spyware/hijackware" on your machine. When you install the

Most of the time, i'm guessing popups are still a result of a normally functioning browser then any spyware...

A better canned answer i would say would be to explain the main sources of popups or explain why adware is used..

Because a very large percentage of pop ups come from desktop advertising parasites or from Windows Messenger. Most pop up killers don't handle messenger pop ups and none handle adware pop ups.

Considering that this person has pop ups from the same site each time, it's unlikely to be normal web page pop ups, and he probably has a parasite installed.

That said, you're right that people shouldn't confuse any spyware killer with a cookie controller or pop up killer. I get irritated to no end with people demanding to know why Ad-aware or Spybot doesn't catch cookies from some obscure domain.

Hmm, I'm confused, if the user gets a popup from the same site each time it's probably a parasite? I guess, i have one, since tripod sites keep trying to make popups on my computer! Should i post a hijackthis log??

You claim that a large percentage of popups are a result of installed parasites, any evidence for that? My experience is the opposite.

I wouldnt take the number of people here and on say spywareinfo forums as evidence, since there is naturally some self-selection going on. (I.e people with soyware related problems will come here)

Okay, i was responding to another post where i interpreted "popups from the same site" as popups occuring when you visit that site.

I'm having some strANGE problems with another computer where the computer spontaneously reboots once every few days..So i might take you up on your offer, but i have to rule out a hardware problem first since the motherboard has being causing me problems since the day i bought it.

I have gotten this several times. A web page you visit will install a link bar in your browser, change your home page, and randomly start popping up ads. The first thing to do when this happens, is to edit your 'hosts' file (/windows (9x), /winnt/system32/drivers/etc (NT,2000), /windows/system32/drivers/etc (XP) and ad this line...
127.0.0.1 www.slotch.com
This will keep this site from popping up. I have a HUGE hosts file!

That's really tantamount to treating the symptoms and not the cause itself.

If popups are being generated from within your machine, you'd better find and get rid of the culprit.

A Hijack This log will practically always allow us to pinpoint that culprit.

If you are reluctant to post your HijackThis log, maybe you could check it yourself for this entry:

If it is present I would appreciate it very much if you could mail me the IEPlugin.dll
