I was wondering if anybody heard anything about McAfee's firewall. My company just recently purchased numerous licesense for it and was wondering what issues I'm going to be running into or what *gulp* any added features I might find, tia.

My wife runs McAfee and won't use anything else. She has a small online business doing graphics art and some web design. She's never had a problem of any sort with McAfee firewall, and the antivirus has saved her quite a few times. I don't know what it is about gamers and graphics arts types but they seem to enjoy spreading viruses to the competition.
She will only use McAfee firewall and antivirus.
Now, she is no antivirus or firewall expert but both work for her in real world situations.

I've been using McAfee Personal Firewall Plus for close to a month now. I got it free through Comcast. I like it alot. My only gripe is that it is version 6.1.6144 and I believe they have version 7 now. I thought it would upgrade to version 7, but it hasn't. I guess since I'm getting it free, I shouldn't complain too much. ;) :)

I have used it for awhile and really liked it alot. It was a very nice PF IMO and the visual trace feature really cool. However it won't run on x64 XP so I gave it to my wife and she likes it as well. When they release an x64 version I will be buying it no doubt.

NO, McAfee is NOT the worst firewall ever...not even close.
Perhaps it didn't satisfy Trojan for some reason, but there are countless independent testing results from non-partisan participants that will confirm and validate that those assessments are untrue. McAfee's Personal Firewall Plus always test very highly, and is one of the more highly regarded firewalls available according to several reputable sources.
The best thing to do is to do a Google search for articles, web-sites and independent tester reviews regarding the McAfee firewall. But asking users of OTHER competing products in a non-McAfee forum is tantamount to asking for biased and unflattering opinions while having some shameless promotions for other competing products thrown into the mix......

Yes, Trojan....I have personally tested McAfee with all of the leak tests and it scored perfect in all tests. I have used it for a while now, have it configured properly and it has done an excellent job of doing exactly what a firewall is supposed to do. I don't know about AOL because I do not and never have used it, but McAfee comes pre-installed on several high quality and reputable machines these days (i.e. - DELL, for example). I'm simply trying to give some good advice and not use the opportunity to rip a product while shamelessly plugging another one, and that's why I am recommending for anyone who is interested to check out unbiased independent testing results from various web-sites and see what the reviewers and testers have to say. I'm confident they will have a differing opinion and experience from yours'......

Yes I have also tested with all the leaktests as well. What your spewing on here is absolutely not true. Mcafee PFP is one of the best out there and frankly based on your comments I seriously doubt you have ever even used it yourself.

I have used McAfee firewall off and on for years and it works excellent. as a matter of fact it is one of only two PC firewalls certified by ICSA, the other is Norton personal firewall.

You heard right. But I believe AOL has two versions of McAfee Firewall. One is free and isn't suppose to be all that great. The other cost a few bucks a month and is suppose to be really good.

I don't like it personally because McAfee needs ActiveX - that big Ms security hole and that's a showstopper for me. Outside of that, everything I've read has been positive.

McAfee PFP 7, along with VS 10 and Privacy Service, are offered free to Comcast customers also. Since I am one, I decided to give PFP 7 a try along with VS 10. They are all full featured apps.
I ran PFP 7 through all the tests, and it performed great. It runs lighter than Zone Alarm. On my computer anyway. I have used Outpost Pro, and PFP 7 runs smoother on my computer. Outpost always seemed a little quirky. That's just me. Your experience with Outpost may be different. To make a long story short, I think PFP 7 is an excellent firewall.

For the last few weeks I've been on the search for a replacement for Kerio 2.15. I've just recently used McAfee PF(Comcast customer) and it's not a bad firewall.
There were to features that it was missing that made uninstall it.
1. I can't remeber the name of this feature but Kerio was flexible in that I could allow program A to connect to Site B using the IP and disallow connections to Site C using the IP as well.
2. When a program was asking to connect to the net the firewall told me which program it was but not where it was trying to connect to.
Those two were the deal breakers especially number 1. I also didn't like that McAfee Security Center.

Hello Everyone!
I never knew this, but my ISP (Comcast) has an offer going on and being that I am a subscriber, McAfee Firewall is free as long as I subscribe to Comcast. I've used McAfee before, liked it, but wanted to ask you all at Wilders if its a good product, and worth it to have or not really...
And lastly, I am on a LAN with 5 other PCs in the house. We are all wireless except the main PC which is hard wired...
Just wondering 1, is it a good or great product? And 2, does anyone know of any conflicts with it and a Linksys router... I use that as a hardware firewall.
Thanks everyone, I hope everyone can give me their feedback :)

I have used McAfee with a linksys router and there are no conficts. Mcafee is a very good antivirus and firewall for free it is a great procuct. You can't go wrong with it especially for free.

I tried Mcafee firewall last night - it stayed on my machine for around 15 minutes - no immediate stability issues or anything and the interface is pretty, but it's got 4 or 5 processes running and that damn Security Center is just annoying, you double click the tray icon to quickly try and access the firewall settings but you HAVE to go through the security center front-end first which lists all their other products that you haven't even got installed.... bit too gimicky for me I'm afraid.
I hear the firewall is pretty good, just not my bloated cup of tea I'm afraid :)

The Dell I recently bought came with both McAfee AV and Firewall installed for a 90-day trial. When they expired, I uninstalled them not because of the lack of quality (I thought both were very good), but because I didn't like the security center and the fact that you need ActiveX enabled. These reasons speak to personal preference and not to quality of the product. I will not state which products I chose beacuse in the original post the question is specifically about McAfee.

I'm also a Comcast customer. I took advantage of their free offer of McAfee products, VS 10 and Personal Firewall Plus 7.
When I first started using the firewall, I was a little worried about some things. It lets some apps, Internet Explorer, Win32 Services, Services And Controler, and all the McAfee apps, have full access. I tried to set those to outbound access only, but after restart, they were back to full access. Also, my AdSubtract Pro will not load without giving it full access.
I have asked about this in the McAfee forum and also with Mcafee's Internet Chat tech support. I was told not to worry, that my computer is secure. I have tested PFP 7 at several tests sites, and all ports are stealth. All seems secure.
PFP 7 does run lite on my old machine, 700Mh, 512 RAM. Give it a try, I think you'll like it.

Graystoke, that sounds good. I am using it now, and everything is running fine. The one thing I do recognize is that the CPU Usage in "Windows Task Manager" is quite high... 100% almost all the time. But I have enough RAM to not worry about that, 512MB I believe it is.
Just curious everyone, is there any known problems in Version 7? I'd like to know if Version 6 or Version 7 of McAfee Personal Firewall Plus would be better to use.
Thanks,
Brian

Oh wow ok cool! Because I remember visiting Mcafee.com in the past when version 6 was out and it had that logo that said it was certified but now when I visited, if I am seeing right, it shows only one logo from ISCA Labs and I think it says "antivirus"...

I am also a Comcast customer and decided to give the McAfee programs a try on two of my home computers. The AV and firewall and fine, but the privacy service is just plain BAD! I need this service as parental controls and even on the older teenager setting it would block half of the web pages we tried to load for inappropriate content. In addition I didn't like the Security Center which seemed more like a way to get you to purchase or install Mcafee products (although they were free with Comcast).
It's back to ZASS 6 which is much better even if I do need to fork out a few bucks every year.

My wife uses mcafee internet security suite 2005 and swears by the firewall and antivirus. I don't think she installed the privacy service. She has complained about the spamkiller being a pain to use.
I'd consider running the antivirus part by itself, but I just don't like or want to deal with the security center.

Camcast doesn't supply the Mcafee Antispam so I have no experience with it. Their AV seems pretty good, the firewall OK, but ZA Security Suite is much better integrated and all of the functions (antispam, parental controls, AV, antispyware, etc.) all seem to work good on both of my home computers so free or not, Mcafee won't be used. Too bad cause I could have saved a few bucks, but in the end it cost me because I wasted my time trying the software that brought complaints from the entire family.
