Newsreader / Newsgroups??

Hi....


Newbie question here....

Can someone tell me the benefits of free and paid for newsreaders.

I'm looking at supernews.com

Are there any security / privacy considerations to take in to account when choosing a newsreader / provider?

Can anyone recommend one or two?

I used Supernews for several years. They do a good job of keeping the spam out of the groups.
The Usenet can fix you right up with a virus if you download the wrong item. The web can do that too. :D

Two readers I use are Super Gravity freeware and Agent 1.93 paid. There are free versions of Agent as well. Agent is up to 3.0 now but I don't have the need to upgrade.
Gravity will support multiple news servers. The later version of Agent will also support multiple news servers.

Since they both have a steep learning curve, I would suggest you download one or both and look at the options.

Agent and Super Gravity are just newsreader clients like outlook is an email client?

To access newsgroups I need a provider....this is Supernews?

Or is Supernews a reader as well?

Correct. Agent is probably the most popular reader used online.
I prefer a stand alone newsreader program rather than one that is included in a suite such as Mozilla.

Supernews is a provider of Usenet groups.

hi, i have Xnews, it seems OK, it's a standalone, but i'm not really sure because i have no idea where to find newsgroup's addresses from. where can i find some?

Does your IP offer newsgroups? Most do. Look on their homepage and see.

You can get a free RSS news app here (http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/subscription/syndication.aspx) click on the bottom red RSS box and subscribe to the feed it is all automatic. It puts a feed shortcut on the top bar of your browser. My opera is shown in the screen shot. You do have to have the CA security advisor feed also but I just delete the content of that one. It gives really good news events.

(edit) you can delete the ca security advisor so you wont have to look at it. And you can add more news feeds also.

i just found this newsreader which looks very good, it's called 40tude Dialog, i'm going to install it then set it up 8)
