If you have never made a visit to this privacy and security site, cruise on over to http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/main-nf.htm
EXCELLENT!
It is maintained by Eric Howes for his classes at the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign.

John,

The general info provided by Eric is indeed very worthwhile, and recommended reading stuff.

The (site/software) links provided are quite outdated at times, but it's the comprehensive general info that counts in the first place IMHO.

regards.

How embarrassing! I haven't been reading the "Adshield" thread so I didn't know the link *had been posted elsewhere. How weird. I don't know how I've missed that site for so long.

Paul, you are right about some of it not being updated. I did come across a few dead links, but then current things were there as well. I suppose keeping one up that detailed and trying to teach is quite a job.

I second that. In the past I pointed Eric to some dead or outdated links, but it's quite a job running his site besides his job, although the two do overlap.

I ran Xenu agains the site and generated a report of broken links, I will not post it here. Should I email it to the guy?

Keeping links current can be a nightmare.
You just made me discover Xenu. Thanks !

can't efficiently run a website without it (or something close to it). Hand checking every link? That site had 4500 someodd links...yikes!

Plus search engines HATE broken links; they normally bail at the first one they encounter.

Hi All:

Thought you might like to know that I've been updating my web site today...

http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/

...to weed out or flag as many bad links as possible. With the help of Xenu LinkSleuth, I've updated 72 of the over 100 pages on the web site. I've removed, flagged, or updated over 200 links (probably closer to 300). I won't claim to have eliminated every last bad link on the site, but there should be significantly fewer of them.

In some cases I've decided not to remove links, but rather to flag them as "Bad" in the hopes that they might become available again. That does happen -- in fact, I got a few links back today in the updating process that I'd previously marked as "Bad." In other cases I've managed to locate new links or alternate links.

The job still isn't completed, though, as I've a whole list of redirects from the Xenu report to go through, about 70% of them from Microsoft -- it's next to impossible to land squarely on a page at MS's site without getting redirected in some way. This will probably take another couple of days to sort through, as redirects are a pain to deal with.

In any case, I hope you find the updated site useful. And, please, if you do encounter a bad link, don't hesitate to email me at:

eburger68@yahoo.com.

All the best,

Eric L. Howes

Eric:

Thank you for keeping up a site of that magnitude along with everything else you have to do.

I plead guilty to getting stuck in ruts and going to the same sites for information. I, amazingly, just came across yours on Saturday when I posted the high recommendation. I wish I would have known of it sooner as it is extremely useful.

Your good work goes recognized here. I know that if FanJ and Spy1 (Jan and Pete) recommend your site it is one of great value to those who frequent wilders.

And here I thought I had really discovered something!
I've been a day late, a dollar short, and the worse for it!

Great job.

John

yes, glad you could make it. I didn't mean to cause you a bunch of work...wait a minute...yes I did!

Either way welcome.

Hi All:

Thanks for the warm reception. I don't make it over to these forums as often as I wish I did, but I'm happy to hear that you all have been using the web site -- that's just as I'd hoped when I first put it up back in 2000.

And don't worry about making work for me -- if the site is to stay useful and relevant, I'll occasionally need a friendly tap to let me know when someone spots problems.

Cheers,

Eric L. Howes
