Is SpyBot causing stability problems and crashing PCs?

1. Does anyone know whether the site at 'adwarereport.com' is any good and any reliability can be placed on their reports . The site carries the following report about spybot-

'We receive a considerable amount of email challenging our claim that Spybot S&D has caused stability problems on our Windows XP test platform. Specifically, this program slowed Internet Explorer to a crawl, a problem we were able to fix by running another top spyware removal tool. A little research showed the other users weren't quite so lucky. From the looks of it, Spybot S&D has crashed more than a few PCs, some to the point where a complete re-install of the operating system was required.'

2. It is interesting ,however,to see that most of the 'supporting' quotes are from diff forums and this quote -'We no longer recommend SpyBot S&D. Version 1.3 has too many stability problems and frankly seriously wrecked some of our clients computers. We have used/recommended SpyBot for many years, until 1.3 came out. It the problems are addressed, we would probably recommend it again.', at

has clearly been commented upon by spywareinfo (the Administrator] as follows-

3. However,there has been a very interesting and a rather long post on this subject recently at DSLReports here-

4. Though there may be a simple explanation to this but in this case also when i visited the referred site i found that though it definitely does not recommend spybot but uses the following words which are completely different from those quoted above-

'SpyBot Search & Destroy
No longer recommended by this site — especially for non-specialist users — due to its false positives, generally poor performance, and questionable recommendations. If you follow the steps I recommend on this page then SpyBot, at best, is unnecessary. This popular program does still have value in the hands of experienced specialists.'

5. Though much of it may be inspired by vested lobbies but there appears to be a debate presently going on about the the merits or otherwise of spybot.

The members are requesred to give their opinion about the utility of this respected freeware.

2.)Very old news and you might as well scratch that....they have a very reliable 1.4 version out.

3.)While I have no problem speaking for myself....I'll simply second what a very respected malware fighter said in that thread.

1. SpyBot and AdAware are two of the programs which have been my constant companions since the early days when I started surfing the Net.

2. The only point is that an ordinary surfer like me requires to be reassured on the reliability of a program , held sacrosanct since long , if its utility seems to be under any kind of debate elsewhere.

3. Incidentally - speaking for myself - I hold AUMHA, DSLR, SWI , WILDERS & CERT (in no particular order) as being some of the most respectable security sites on the net.

4. I stand reassured by the categorical stand taken by the Mod but await responses from other members also , if they will.

I've used Spybot S&D 1.3 for ages and put it on lots of peoples machines with no problems.

I think many scanners do seem to be passing Spybot in their ability to find and remove spyware. But Spybot is still a very useful app, and it still does a good job at finding spyware. It doesn't seem to find any, or very few, FPs on my computer. Many payware programs have many more FPs than Spybot.

It does seem to update very infrequently compared to some of the payware scanners though, but hey what can we expect from a free scanner?

Not to mention all its other great features that so few ever mention.

I am going to continue to use Spybot, and recommend it to others, because it is still a very good anti-spyware app for anyone to have.
