Trouble installing Recovery Console

Hello,

I've the following dual-boot configuration:

1) C-partition: FAT32, contains Win 98 Sec Ed
2) E-partition: NTFS for WinXP Pro.

I was trying to get the Recovery Console as a start-up option in the boot menu. It installs alright using "D:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons", with D= CDROM-drive but when selecting it in the boot-menu I get the following error: "setup cannot load the keyboard lay-out file KBDUS.dll. Setup cannot continue. Shutdown or restart your computer".
The KBDUS.dll is available in E:\windows\system32 and in E:\windows\system32\dlcache.
So why that error message?

Hi PeterVO,

This behavior could be triggered because the files are on the NTFS partition.
Grant Administrators and System and Everyone Full Control on the root of the volume that contains the $Win_nt$.~bt folder.
That should do it.

It works but it's not very wise...
Rule #1 about security : Never give to all users administrator privileges.
An administrator account is intended to administrate and no need for other users to have root access :

anybody might alter your config, especially if you connect to the W3 with an admin account and you by bad luck happened to be hacked.

To install Recovery Console as a Startup Option :

Log on to Windows XP Professional as an administrator or as a user with administrator rights.
If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from completing this procedure. Contact your network administrator for assistance. Insert the Windows XP Professional CD into your CD ROM drive. If you’re prompted to upgrade to Windows XP, click No.

From the command prompt—or from the Run command in the Start menu–type the path to the appropriate Winnt32.exe file (on your Windows XP Professional CD), followed by a space and /cmdcons to reference this switch.
x:\1386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons. Follow the instructions that appear.
(x= CDROM letter)

To run Recovery Console on a computer if Windows XP Professional does not start

Restart your computer, and then choose Windows Recovery Console from the list of operating systems. Follow the instructions that appear. Recovery Console displays a command prompt. Make the required changes to your system.

To see the commands available in Recovery Console, type “help” at the command prompt. To restart your computer, type “exit” to close the Recovery Console command prompt.

Sorry, but such a $Win_NT.~bt-folder can not be found on my system.
I'm puzzled.

"KBDUS.dll was loaded, but the DLLRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file can not be registered"

???

Seems that your *dll is not on the right spot

You should ask on the official NG WindowsXP for instance :
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support
