New LNS user need some help

Hi Folks,

Today I started my test with LNS.

I´m still an Outpost user, and read a lot about LNS and had some help from this forum too.
I think I don´t need to say how great LNS is.Everybody here knows it.
But, I have some questions about it, and hope them can be solved here.

1) I have downloaded 2 beta drivers: LNSFW and LNSFW1. Can I keep it ?

2) When I was using Outpost and tried to use for example Skype, it ask to allow a lot of ports. A solution for it is to create a rule or allow it always.
With LNS I just allow it 1 time and no more worries. I like this way, but I´d like to know why do I need this rule:

to open port 54977.

The same question applies to my Counter Strike, The All Seeing Eyes and MSN Messenger.
If I allow it, why do I need those rules ?

3) I´m using a 3Com Office Connect 812 router and after tested LNS with Shields UP, It fails with Solicited TCP Packets, Ping Reply and my port 23 is open.
Is that normal ?

4) I´m using EnhancedRulesSet.
Is that good enough ?

5) I really like this firewall.
It´s really lighter than OP and now I need to learn how to work with it.I´m still confused about create rules and etc. ::)

Hi Donkid,

1) You can install the betadrivers and see if they work for you. Please read the info Frederic has given about settings when using the betadrivers.

2) LnS has to components; the firewall (inbound filtering) and program control (outbound filtering). Giving a program outbound control does not open up ports that are closed by the firewall component. To open up ports, you need to use rules, like the ones you mentioned.

3) It could be that your router is filtering before LnS, so when you run a test like that you test the router instead of LnS.

4) Its good enough. Best set is Phantoms ruleset.

5) Not to good at it myself. Just try and learn ;D

Thanks a lot for your help.

I understand now.
If I test LNS using Dial up, it will be ok.
One more question.
Using my router and having those ports opened, do I need to close them in my router or LNS blocks it ?

Hi Donkid, did you receive my email?

You could try to stealth the port on your router. But LnS should block things.

You could test LnS by removing your router and couple your pc directly to internet (or place your pc in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) if your router supports that). :)
