{QUOTE-> i know it says it doesnt need to run, but exactly how does that work? <-QUOTE}The three main Internet Explorer protection features of Spywareblaster are....ActiveX CLSID's, Cookies and Restricted Sites. When you enable protection for any of those 3 features....you are in effect merging a .reg file into the proper Internet Explorer location of the registry for the protection selected.

Internet Explorer Protection:

ActiveX protection sets a kill-bit to prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware / potentially unwanted software.
How to stop an ActiveX control from running in Internet Explorer (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=240797)
Prevent ad / tracking cookies....places a long list of URL's that you can view in Internet Explorer's Tools\Internet Options\Privacy tab....WebSites\Edit
Managing Cookies On the Internet Explorer 6.0 Privacy Tab (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/btw/ie/ie-opts.htm#privacy)
Restricted Sites Protection:
Places a longgg list of web site URL's into Internet Explorers Restricted Zone.
