An Extremely Brief History of Time
1687: Isaac Newton
The universe has one absolute clock:
• Time and space are independant of the observer.
• Time's arrow points forward; events move ahead from the now.
1905: Albert Einstein
every observer has his or her own (accurate) clock:
• The universe exists in a space-time manifold.
• Everyone's "now" is different.
• Acceleration affects time.
2003: Peter Lynds
There is no clock; "time" is an illusion
• Time has no indivisible unit.
• There is no "now," only sequences of events

In today's world some events are LOST in time. :D
A lady died this past December, and Citibank billed her in January and February for their annual service charges on her credit card, and then added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00 and now it is somewhere around $60.00. A call was placed to Citibank:
Caller: "I am calling to tell you that she died in December."
Citibank: "The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply."
Caller: "Maybe, you should turn it over to collections."
Citibank: "Since it is 2 months past due, it already has been."
Caller: "So, what will they do when they find out she is dead."
Citibank: "Either report her account to the frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe both!"
Caller: "Do you think God will be mad at her?"
Citibank: "Excuse me?"
Caller: "Did you just get what I was telling you--What part about her being dead don't you understand?"
Citibank: "Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor."
Supervisor gets on the phone:
Caller: "I'm calling to tell you, she died in December."
Citibank: "The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply."
Caller: "You mean you want to collect from her estate?"
Citibank: (Stammer). "Are you her lawyer?"
Caller: "No, I'm her great nephew." (Lawyer info given)
Citibank: "Could you fax us a certificate of death?"
Caller: "Sure." (Fax number is given)
After they get the fax:
Citibank: "Our system just isn't setup for death. I don't know what more I can do to help."
Caller: "Well, if you figure it out, great! If not, you could just keep billing her. I don't think she will care."
Citibank: "Well, the late fees and charges do still apply."
Caller: "Would you like her new billing address?"
Citibank: "That might help."
Caller: "Odessa Memorial Cemetery, Hwy 129, plot number 69."
Citibank: "Sir, that's a cemetery!"
Caller: "What do you do with dead people on your planet?"

That noise made by a cat is known as the 'Doppler' effect named after Arnold P. Doppler who discovered it after being hit by a Train, from then on he always managed to remember if something was 'going' or 'coming' by it's sound. Sadly, he was killed in 1881 whilst crossing the road in Memphis by the first 'Silent' Electric Automobile built by Charles D. Engine.....who later built the first car engine which was named after him and called the 'Engine'...

The 3D/4D Controversy:
It is uncontroversial that physical objects are typically extended in both space and time. But there is some controversy in the philosophy of time over whether extension in time is analogous to extension in space. Spatial extension is normally thought of as necessarily involving different spatial parts at different locations in space. (Although it should be noted that those who believe in extended mereological simples (i.e., objects without proper parts) would deny this.) A bicycle, for example, can be extended across a doorway in virtue of having some spatial parts inside the doorway and other spatial parts outside the doorway. Is temporal extension necessarily like this? That is, when a bicycle is extended from time t1 to time t2, does it have its temporal extension in virtue of having different temporal parts at the different times? Or does a bicycle manage to be extended in time from t1 to t2 in virtue of being “wholly present” (as opposed to merely partly present) at each of those times?
According to The 4D View, temporally extended objects have temporal parts, temporal extension is perfectly analogous to spatial extension, and time is one of four dimensions that are on a par, at least with respect to the manner in which objects are spread out in space-time. On The 3D View, however, temporally extended objects do not have temporal parts, temporal extension is very different from spatial extension, and time is unique among the four dimensions of the world, at least with respect to the manner in which objects are spread out in space-time.
On The 4D View, objects are to be thought of as four-dimensional “space-time worms,” each of which is made up of many different temporal parts, like the different spatial segments of an earthworm. An object at a time -- Descartes in 1625, for example -- is not the whole object but, rather, a mere part (a temporal part) of that object; and the relation between Descartes in 1625 and Descartes in 1635 is like the relation between the two wheels of a bicycle: they are different parts of a bigger whole. By contrast, on The 3D View, objects are to be thought of as three-dimensional things that are not made up of different temporal parts. On this view, an object at a time -- Descartes in 1625, for example -- is the same thing as the whole object -- Descartes. Thus, according to The 3D View, the relation between Descartes in 1625 and Descartes in 1635 is the relation of identity: each one is just the same thing as Descartes.
As in the case of the disputes between A Theorists and B Theorists, on the one hand, and Presentists and Non-presentists, on the other hand, the 3D/4D controversy is part of a general disagreement among philosophers of time concerning the degree to which time is dissimilar from the dimensions of space. That general disagreement has been an important theme in the philosophy of time during the last one hundred years, and will most likely continue to be so for some time to come.

Time Travel
We are all familiar with time travel stories, and there are few among us who have not imagined traveling back in time to experience some particular period or meet some notable person from the past. But is time travel even possible?
One question that is relevant here is whether time travel is permitted by the prevailing laws of nature. This is presumably a matter of empirical science (or perhaps the correct philosophical interpretation of our best theories from the empirical sciences). But a further question, and one that falls squarely under the heading of philosophy, is whether time travel is permitted by the laws of logic and metaphysics. For it has been argued that various absurdities follow from the supposition that time travel is (logically and metaphysically) possible. Here is an example of such an argument.
(1) If you could travel back in time, then you could kill your grandfather before your father was ever conceived. (For what's to stop you from bringing a gun with you and simply shooting him?)
(2) It's not the case that you could kill your grandfather before your father was ever conceived. (Because if you did, then you would ensure that you never existed, and that is not something that you could ensure.)
-------------------
(3) You cannot travel back in time.
Another argument that might be raised against the possibility of time travel depends on the claim that Presentism is true. For if Presentism is true, then neither past nor future objects exist. And in that case, it is hard to see how anyone could travel to the past or the future.
Despite the existence of these and other arguments against the possibility of time travel, there may also be problems associated with the claim that time travel is not possible. For one thing, many scientists and philosophers believe that the actual laws of physics are in fact compatible with time travel. And for another thing, as I mentioned at the beginning of this section, we often think about time travel stories; but it is very plausible to think that a story cannot depict things that are downright impossible. For example, it is natural to think that there could not be a story in which two plus two are five, or in which there is a sphere that both is and is not red all over. (This seems especially true if the story is told pictorially, as in the case of a movie.) Hence, if time travel is impossible, then we should not even be able to consider any story in which time travel occurs. And yet we do so all the time! One task facing the philosopher who claims that time travel is impossible, then, is to explain the existence of a huge number of well-known stories that appear to be specifically about time travel.

About Time
I have a theory. Time compresses with age. Think back to when you were very young. A day could last forever. A ten-minute time-out seemed like hours. And summer vacations? True eternities.
Something happens to time as we grow older. Even though every time-measuring device made by man tells us that each day lasts twenty-four hours, each hour 60 minutes, each minute 60 seconds, the time seems to fly by. Weeks, months, even years vanish in the blink of an eye.
A friend of mine once shared the thought that when you're young, even a single day is a large part of your existence. As you grow older, that day becomes a smaller portion of your life, so the time seems to move more quickly. Plus, we tend to pack more "must-do" items into each day. Honestly, did you have a "to-do" list when you were ten years old? Anything more pressing than Trick-or-Treating on your October agenda?
I vote for turning back time, even if only for an afternoon. Take a few hours to piddle, play, and perhaps plan some holiday quilting projects. Don't look at the clock, don't worry about dinner, and quilt guilt? Don't even go there. We've got a free pass this afternoon. No guilt allowed.

TURNING BACK TO APPRECIATE WHAT YOU HAVE, JUST WATCHING LIFE TAKE ITS SHAPE.
IT IS WEIRD HOW PEOPLE AS THEY GET OLDER CAN REMEMBER THINGS FROM THEIR CHILDHOOD AND NOT THE DAY BEFORE!?!
SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE THERE IS NO TIME, TIME IS A MAN MADE 'THING' MADE FOR HIS CONVENIENCE, IF YOU THINK THAT WAY, WHY WOULD THE UNIVERSE CARE A FIG ABOUT TIME?
GETTING VERY DEEP HERE.........DEEPER?

I don't think the universe gives a hoot about time. I believe that man only cares about time because it affects him on a very personal level. If it wasn't for that what is time anyways, It is just a man made measurement that is used to record what has or hasn't happened yet.And in the larger scheme of things what does it really matter.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT HOW LONG THE UNIVERSE HAS BEEN.......LOL! IT IS LAUGHABLE TO THINK WE MAKE MUCH DIFFERENCE......BUT, THEN WHAT WOULD BE THE POINT....SO MAKE UP A THING CALLED TIME.....GET EVERYONE TO DANCE TO IT.......YA GOT YERSELF A WURLD.......LOL!
I DON'T THINK THE UNIVERSE HAS TIME .ONLY PEOPLE HAVE OR DON'T HAVE TIME.
THE HARDER ONE IS THERE IS NO SPACE? THAT IS STILL A THEORY I HAVEN'T WRAPPED MY BRAIN AROUND......BUT I WILL......IN 'TIME' ;)

Depends what your Horse did the night before. ;D
You lovers of the English language might enjoy this .
There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings
than any other two-letter word, and that is "UP."
It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the
top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do
we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do
we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why
is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?
We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room,
polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the
kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.
At other times the little word has real special meaning. People
stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and
think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed
UP is special.
And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it
is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it
UP at night.
We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about
the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a
desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and
can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you
might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will
take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind
UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it
is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP.
When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When
it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.
One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP,
so. Time to shut UP!
Oh...one more thing:
What is the first thing you do in the morning &the last thing you
do at night? U - P
;)

I liked all his songs, but LOVE "TIME IN A BOTTLE' and the story that went with it, was a real tearjerker too!
But, love the song with/without the story!
You certainly have a wide range of links, Primrose!

Sorry to spoil all of this............. ;D
Time is based upon the speed of light C / constant although the speed of light isn't constant.but never mind its the closest to a constant most physicists could think of at the time.pardon the pun
Einstein predicted that particles travelling below the speed of light.couldn't be accelerated beyond the speed of light.he also predicted that particles travelling faster than the speed of light.couldn't travel slower than the speed of light.such particles have been discovered.which means these particles have traveled from the future to the present.and will continue travelling into the past.Time exists now in the future and in the past.it is continuous throughout the creation and the inevitable end of the universe.which means I was going to write this.it was inevitable your replies are also inevitable.because the future has already happened.your walking in your own footsteps through time.intriguing isn't it ???
Time is fluid

I think the word we should focus on here is: "OBSERVE". (;D)
Marja
June 7th, 2005, 04:33 PM
So far scientist haven't and can't OBSERVE everything, so what have they missed?!?
TIME will tell, or not! ::)
If you believe Devilin, Ronjor, then you and I are both RIGHT! :o :o I KNOW ya don't want that! LOL!!
