Don't see a problem with the question myself - but I for one do not - I use Teamspeak to communicate with most of my overseas friends etc but in a pinch (say you can't get a server to work properly) then good ol' Roger Wilco always works fine. I have saved myself an older version of Roger Wilco from before they started adding in "Gamespy" junk so I always have it as backup but Teamspeak is much better quality etc.

I do! It works great for me!! No cross talk like MSN Messenger but does not support WebCam :( plus I don't have to Enable UPnP in my router to talk, so I would say it is more secure!! HTH !!

I use it sometimes, but I also find alternative ways in every aspect.

But what I would like to know from you, Cochise is where is this leading to??
just guessing -
Are you looking for how many people use Skype ?
Are you trying to find alternative solutions ?
Do you have a query with Skype ?
Are you looking for new Skype buddies ?
Or you just starting a topic for the heck of starting one ?

Cochise, just come out and I'm sure mods and admins will not delete you, as i'm sure you are not intentionally crossing the line ... ;D

There's no big secret or ulterior motive Pals....I've been seeing it talked about in my 'Computer Active' mag plus there was a half-hour prog about it on UK TV last night, so I thought I would make a few tentative enqiuries where the knowledge of stuff flows best and that's here.

I have Rellies in South Africa, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, they all have Broadband and we Email all the time but it would be even better if we could all gab together for nothing eh?..

Anyway I have actually D/ld Skype onto my System but as yet I don't have anyone to try it out on, so basically I was looking for any Downers or Uppers regarding the programme........I did hear a whisper that the 'Agreement' allowed for 'Scumware'??!!...........

I've checked it out as best I can with my Security stuff and nothing has shown up, so I think I might risk it and give it a go........of course i don't want to recommend something to my Family and friends that migh cause them problems.

So there you have it........all comments and/or advice will be greatfully received...... ;D

I have taken liberty to move this to a Forum that may provide more comments from users than what might be found in TF. I am also interested in what others knowledge of this program are.

My first read of Skype's EULA (http://www.skype.com/company/legal/eula/) does not yet cause me concern....but will re-read said EULA real close.

I considered SKEPE, but reading the EULA turned me off. They require using your computer as a server so the can route traffic through it. I'll pass.

Many thanks for your thoughts on the subject, your comments are exactly what I'm asking for here.

Is this the Paragraph you weren't happy about?...I can see your misgivings upto a point, but I don't think the Programme would work without this facility.

I did notice that there are something like 2.5 million users at the moment if that's anything to go by.... ;D

I agree that the program probably wouldn't work with out the server thing. But if someone should compromise them, they have access to your computer. Just isn't worth free long distance to me.

Also there was a thread on DSLReports a while back about a number of people who had credit cards stolen, and used to charge services from SKYPE. They contacted SKYPE to try and got help, and not one of them even got a response. Just adds to my concerns about giving them server rights on my computer.

Well having your Credit Card stolen and used for whatever purpose has really nothing to do with anything, the fact that it's used to make calls on Skype is irrelevant the Card could be used for BT or anything else for that matter...it's hardly the fault of Skype, how are they supposed to know??........

I agree with you in principle. No one said it was there fault it happened, but was upsetting people was the fact they could have been helpful in resolving things for the people involved, but never even responded to them, even just to say they couldn't help.

That just raised an additional concern in my mind about letting them use my machine as a server, because it was an indication, that if there was a problem, they wouldn't be of any help. That was my only point.

Well Pete, I have just had my first conversation with someone on the other side of the World for FREE......the only trouble I had with it was, I was so excited at the concept, I must have sounded totally manic, (I will try and calm myself down in the future and become a little more coherent), either way, I'am sold, I think this is the way to go.........to put it in a nutshell, everyone here at Wilders could speak to each other Person to Person or even in a group and it wouldn't cost a BEAN..........Think about it!...

If Beetleboss and the Girls get to know about it we may never hear from them again here at Wilders........ ;D ;D ;D

We have used Skype since it started and have never had any problems with it. It is very clear and we talk to people all over the world with it. If anyone wants to test it our Skype User name is herne67. :)

Another simple alternative -

I run an internet cafe and afew of my pc's have skype. Afew people use this. But If you have web cam (and most web cams you buy now come with mics) so all you need is headphones/speakers (to hear). If you have this combo, try downloading the new(ish) version of yahoo (beta) or/and messenger 7. They have the ability for voice aswell. Even better..... you can see your family and friends, and they can see you. ;D

Most of my customers are changing over to this cos it has visual aswell. 8)

I agree!! But with MSN if you have a router you will have to Enable UPnP to speak to one another which could Compromise your security.

But I do use MSN Messenger with my web cam all the time but when I'm not using it I turn off UPnP in my router!!;)

I've never been a lover of MSN or Yahoo stuff, they always seemed to come with 'By-Products'.. ;D and so I removed MSN entirely.......according to the Skype blurb they already have Web-cam facility on their 'Wish-list', so I think I will wait patiently 'til then.......come to think about it tho'?...it could be a bit off putting being able to see me as well as trying to make any sense of what I was saying......a bit like patting your head and rubbing your belly at the same time..... ;D ;D ;D

If you want simply a talk, why don't you use Picophone. It is a great soft. Works with almost any connection and any port. I've been using it for more than 3 years. It is also free; however, requires some basic computer knowledge like: UDP port, IP-address, router redirection. All of my "non IT specialist" friends learned how to use it in 5 min.
