Yeh, I think I need help too. Here I thought being on cable high speed service was fast. ::) Better than dialup I guess. Could using a really old computer be a factor?
Allstream - 889 and 583
Froggy - 536 and 407
Speakeasy - 1090 and 350

Mine is only two years old and your scores are better than mine??!! :'(
I have Packard Bell...Win XP...2gig Pentium 4....40gig HDD and 256 Ram?... ;D

some other stuff which can impact speed:
1) proxy use (if you use proxomitron put it on by pass for the test)
2) av scan (up to you if you trust the site)
3) doing the test a 2nd or 3rd time and not clearing your cache (allstream test result can be manipulated if you do not clear your cache)
4) your network congestion
5) Your Browser
6) etc....
try this test to eliminate #3 cache issue if the others will post again:

using a different computer (but same connection), i cleared the cache and got the following results, a bit more accurate so maybe outpost and/or nod32 slowed it down on my main comp? mcafees test shows similar results but for it, i dont need to clear the cache.

To bolster what has been said:
from Intel:
Internet connection speed varies depending on your Internet Service Provider, modem type, time of day, browser version, operating system, traffic, and intersecting signals. Results are not a guarantee of true connection speed.
they left out proxy use and impact of AV shields and other protection we use to use the net safely etc...
with that said they have a speed test here which seems to match the download speeds I have seen:

Peakaboos' Intel Test gave me an average of 335.4 over four tests........ ;D
Does anyone ever get the full promised 512kbs?.... ;)
On 'Intel I get:- 335.4 and on McAfee I get:- 460.8........
By the way, all my Tests have been taken with AV and FW working...no difference whether cached or not and using IE Browser......

All I get on 'Speakeasy' is this:-

Cochise... I think your results are good.
I was able to sneak a 489Kbps at the Intel test earlier in the day.

Right now lots of congestion I'm lucky to get 434 in 10 tries
The magic 512Kbps still eludes me...

I ran across only a few speed tests which have reliability as follows:
FTP SPEED TESTS: run to about 30-50% of download or until stable speed achieved... convert the value to MBps or Mbps - this is your download speed (don't forget to delete the file they are very large)
OOL FTP Speed Test
ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/pub/test64
AOL FTP Test
ftp://ftp.newaol.com/aol6.0/179902/setupaol60.exe
RoadRunner FTP Test
ftp://test.tampabay.rr.com/ftp.50m.sav
speed tests from this http://www.dslreports.com/stest/0
SPEAKEASY SPEED TESTS:
New York City http://nyc.speakeasy.net/
Chicago http://chi.speakeasy.net/
Washington D.C. http://wdc.speakeasy.net/
San Francisco http://sfo.speakeasy.net/
Denver http://den.speakeasy.net/
Dallas http://atl.speakeasy.net/
Atlanta http://atl.speakeasy.net/
Boston http://bos.speakeasy.net/
Philadelphia http://www.phl.speakeasy.net/
Los Angeles http://lax.speakeasy.net/
Cleveland http://cle.speakeasy.net/
Houston http://hou.speakeasy.net/

If you are having a problem with your speed, the key is to find out what your ISP's advertised up/down speed and then compare
if you are 90% or better of advertised you are doing well
if not your RWin value may need some tweaking
good info here:
http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=73799
&
http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-2097
ck your Rwin value here: http://forums.speedguide.net:8117/
good tweak test here also: http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
good line quality test here http://www.dslreports.com/testme
I used both TCP Optimizer & DRTCP to optimize my settings and am a happy camper 8) @ about 4.75 sometimes up to 4.8 Mbps out of 5 without packet loss...
_____________________________
Great analogy for RWin value:
RWin and Milkshake analogy from http://www.dslreports.com/faq/578
Default RWIN for broadband, is like having a tiny straw in a thick milk shake, only so much can get through the straw (line), so fast. By putting a larger straw (higher RWIN) in that same thick shake, you allow more shake (data) to come through faster, to a point that is. After which, there is no more improvement, and shake (data) can start spilling all over (packet loss). So the key is, to find an RWIN that fits your line just right.

All of the speakeasy sites actually end up at broadband reports:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest
This is the best speed test site.
For those getting absurd speed results with the graphics test, it is because the image is already in your cache. If you run the test twice, without emptying the browser cache, you will get meaningless results.
