If you're using Firefox, try this: http://adblock.mozdev.org/

First of all I use the userContent.css by Floppymoose.
http://www.floppymoose.com/

I use the Adblock filters from here:
http://www.geocities.com/pierceive/adblock/

Please read the instructions.

I also use the Filterset.G from pierceive

Another alternative AdBlock filter set is available from RejZoR (of this forum) at http://www.excessive-software.tk/

I also find that using BlocklistManager and Protowall (from the bluetack site) works really nicely in conjunction with the adblock filtering. One acts as a backup for the other

Edit: Added link for Bluetack Internet Security Solutions (http://www.bluetack.co.uk/index.php)

It works pretty good for most sites. I get no false positives. The "ads" filters seem to be the most affective.

Thanks all for your input.

I have decided to use a combination of both: Perceive (Blocks advanced ads) and RejZor (Personally, how I would have made my own hosts file, except it's better) for filters in Adblock.

And MPVC and Mike's hosts file/s as backup - for anything that goes through the 2 adblock filters.

I also have flashblock installed, no no flash content loads without me pressing the play button.

Good enough... :)

Don't the folks who developed the Mozilla AdBlocker already have some very complete blocking lists? They use to.

Seeing as you have mentioned FF extensions you should also have a look at PrefBar (http://prefbar.mozdev.org/), as it provides a *very* quick and convenient way to turn off functionality like java, javascript (and flash if you like). I have customised the bar a little to show these buttons "referrer, images, flash, popus, javascript, java, animation, cookies, cookie warning, colors,SystemColors,ClearCache"
As a result I tend to browse most sites (even safe ones) with javascript disabled and its easy to turn off images as well to get that retro look and a faster page load...

Something to consider when using hosts files for blocking is that at least a few of the advertisers have moved on and are now using IP addresses (which don't need a name lookup)

The advantage of an IP blocker is that it works on both the name or the IP
The disadvantage is that it can block hosts that you want to get to and can require some tweaking occasionally

You can set it up on the same machine (Protowall, Outpost plugin, ZAP Rules etc) or using another machine as a proxy and/or firewall. I have used the rules generated from the Blocklist directly loaded into ZoneAlarm Pro as well as using Protowall and both work well. Other people have had good experiences with the Outpost plugin...

I tried PrefBar, it was good but some buttons don't work properly and I don't like how it takes screen viewing space (yes, I can just press a key to hide/show when ever I want but I can't be bothered). Instead I use the "x" extension which takes up a button on the toolbar, I just click it then press OK... and it deletes all sensitive files. Furthermore, I rarely need to disable/enable thigns regulary so I have no use for it.

With the advertisers and IP Address issues, hopefully Adblock will block ads regardless of IP address or hostname. Granted, that hosts files don't protect against IP address advertisers, but thats why I have Adblock with 2 filters as backup.

I recently started using Firefox. For the first week it was wonderful. Then, suddenly, ads started popping up--is there something else you suggest I load, or some sort of setting I need to take care of? Thanks! <Removed>@msn.com

When you say ads, do you mean popups or regular ads. By the way, you might want to delete your email address from your post to protect yourself from harvester-bots.

Hey, thanks...I mistakenly thought someone had to reply to my email address. Then, I realized I was on this website!
THANKS to whoever removed my email address. Geez, my problems would have gotten a zillion times worse!

You'll probably find there are many false positives with those 2 lines, for example, /ads/ will match downloads and anything else with "ads" in the url.
