Anyone know this problem?

Hi

A friend of mine tries to install AVG and she gets a message " you have no rights..." and with Avast "you are not valid.." Also with online scan everytime she tries to download that feature (HomeCall) she gets booted and she doesn´t get scanned anything.
I think it´s a trojan or something it doesn´t belong to anyones puter, am I right ...? I told her to download TrojanHunter if it allows her to install that and scan the system; win98. She hasn´t had any antistuff yet on her puter.
One thing I will recommend is StartupList feature if it finds anything. I just thought if someone of you already knows this.

The on-line scanners are installing some items on your system also, and without admin rights there might be a problem.....

Hi guys

This madness is still on the loose. As I did IM to Pieter her startup list once, she has no password set up either.
She "changed" her windows password like this way I told to do: "passwords" icon on control panel, "change windows password", then she changed blank field to another, so she noticed she had no password set up.
But it still doesn´t allow to install antivirus.
All advices will be respectfully taken and processed ;)

Windows 98 doesn't require admin access to install programs. It assumes everyone has admin access.

Might try a registry clean up to see if some "vestigial organ" is blocking the installs. :)

also AVAST 4.0 is for an Windows NT based system only.
When you try to install the antivirus, do you try going to the start menu and clicking on the RUN tab , then select the file to run from there?
Have you tried installing any other programs to see if it is just a bad download of AVG?
It is possiable the computer is so screwed up now , only a fresh FDISK, FORMAT and reinstalling Windows will help.
Your computer should NEVER reboot unless you tell it too.

I think it can be installed on 95 and 98 also. Just more buggy!

When I was running the beta it wouldn't allow an install on anything but a NT machine. I would get the unvalid OS error also.
I still have that beta and key around some place ;) being the software junkie I am ;D

Well, it's been a finished release for several months now! ;) :) ;D

The current builds of avast! 4 should not have any problems under Win9x anymore - should be quite "stable" - as far as the OS allows.. ;D

To eliminate the possibility of malicious startups or registry entries, would it serve any useful purpose to run Hijack This on the affected PC?

If that PC has never seen any AV software in the past then I would rule out expired trial versions of software which has expired or those are just messages from the vendor letting your friend know trial version are no longer available to them..but that is a common practice...with messages like this..

I had also wondered if your friend lives in a country where both of those AV products are just not available for trial or update by agreement for distribution ...but I do not think that is the case here since he/she could also not get house call to work ( yet that could be to do with the browser setting or again not being available.


So since it is Win 98 and doubtfully with that OS any admin rights issue that leave the bad boys that are out there.
