I who know nothing

I was recently infected for the first time in a very long time although Im not sure how. I kept on being redirected to adware and porn sites and my desktop and taskbar filled with unwanted adware and porn icons which reappeared even after I deleted them.
Microsoft antispyware couldnt stop any of this happening even when I used the browser hijack restore I kept on being redirected. When I ran a scan it didnt pick up any malware.
Ad Aware detected and removed lots of malware but it couldnt stop me being redirected nor could it remove any of the unwanted icons.
Spybot detected and removed a couple of malware but it couldnt stop me being redirected nor remove the unwanted icons.
Spywareguard couldnt stop me being redirected.
My resident EZ AV (Vet engine) detected some malware and quarantined it but it couldnt stop me being redirected nor remove the unwanted icons.
KAV 5.0 Personal using extended databases however detected and deleted the WarSpy.e trojan downloader and Serpo.j adware which stopped me being redirected and allowed me to remove the unwanted icons.

Spot on :)
Hmm...Panda and BitDefender are also quite good at Adware/Spyware detection....

I think you were at risk using EZ Av.. even AVAST or AntiVir [home editions] are much better and have the same price tag! [$0.00 + 6% sales tax + 10% VAT for UK].

But if you are "I who know nothing" how do you know it's configured correctly? :-0)
Besides there are lots of ways to get infected besides straight thru browser.

May I ask, exactly what were you infected with. And where was the location.
I had a problem with a Trojan redirect the other day. I was using Firefox, and it went into the Sun Java Cache. It was called Shinwow.

I listed the infections in my initial post ie warspy trojan dropper and serpo adware. The reason EZ AV didnt pick them up was because they were not listed in their virus database and had no signatures for them whereas KAV had listed them just a few days before I got infected so the response time in releasing new signatures is argueably the most important criteria in selecting an AV. From an old study done on response time I recall that VET were amongst the slowest. Needless to say I renewed my KAV key given it seems to release new signatures faster than anyone else.

I agree. I chose KAV for its daily (actually intra-daily) updates. I was being burned too many times by Norton's weekly updates and when I looked at McAfee, they too were only providing weekly automatic updates to their home users (I understand that they may be providing daily updates in the near future).
I think KAV does a great job of detection (I am using 4.5 because I didn't like KAV 5.0's ADS), and it looks like 6.0's Pro-Active features will continue to make it one of the AV products that should be evaluated by anyone that is looking for a new AV/AT/AS.

It wouldn't be the first time. When push comes to shove and you need serious cleaning/protection, KAV is the only answer.
There are many fine AV's out there, and then there is Kaspersky.

I have a question to ask. I read in the Kaspersky forums that KAV's heuristics engine will be upgraded in the future. When it does arrive, will it be available to users of older KAV versions (4.x, 5.x)? ???

No. i don't believe it will be made available in the 5 series, because i think it would not make much sense businesswise to adjust it to the 5 series even if it is possible (it would to us of course, but thats another matter ;) ), but no official word yet.
If you download and try the Kis 2006 prototype2 to take a look at the Proactive Defense, then you will see that it is a very integrated product, despite this, the two processes in taskmanager use between 4-10mb memory and as you can see in the screenshot, the only thing i've not installed is anti-spam.
If you would like to try, then have a look here:http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=115, i used the installer found in post #3 and haven't had a problem with this install since installing with this one thursday/friday. :)
