View Full Version : Downloading NOD32 I just won from Wilders (question)

Hi,
Ok I just won the NOD32 from here, and I have a question. And I am sure I will be back with more questions. Because I don't know a thing yet about NOD32 . :)
I have not actually downloaded it yet. But I'm about to.
Do I need to uninstall the antivirus thats on my computer before I download?
What about the firewall?
The antivirus I have on my computer now is etrust antivirus and firewall (together).
If I uninstall it, will it also uninstall the firewall?
I don't know about NOD32 yet, so does it have a firewall too?
I just don't want to uninstall my firewall, if I won't have one with NOD32.
Thanks
Hekx

From what I've gathered, you would have less problems if you did remove any other AV software prior to using NOD32. But since yours is a suite with a firewall included, you might be able to disable the AV protection or turn it down to a setting which would not interfer greatly. I have heard and seen people use more than one AV real-time monitor without fairly drastic problems.
There are a lot of other firewalls available if you are open to trying an alternate product. ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com) is one of the more popular and offer both a free and paid package.
Hope this helps. :)

Does security suite mean (combination) of antivirus, and firewall? LOL I dont know much :)
Do you know how long the ZoneAlarm free trial lasts ?
Thanks for your help !! :)

Hello,
NOD32 doesn't have a firewall.
Uninstalling your current antivirus is most recommended, but if you want to keep it, switch resident protection off in eTrust OR Nod32, so they don't collide. But NOD32 excels in resident and on-demand scanning as well.
Get the official release 2.12.3, and set it up as per Blackspear's recommendations here: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=37509 . This way NOD32 provides maximum security.
And don't be frightened by it's GUI that might seem unfriendly on first look; it allows you to configure every aspect of the AV, and it is subject to change anyway :)
If you feel confident, try out the 2.5 beta as well. It's very stable and has some real nice new features.
Welcome to the club of NOD32 users! ;D
Regards,
SA

Yes, a security suite is usually comprised of multiple tools usually of the same nature as the main program. According to the website (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp), the Zone Alarm trials for most of their products run for 15 days before requiring purchase. Zone Alarm FREE on the other hand is free for non-commercial consumers for an unending time period.

I'd recommend Kerio Personal Firewall (www.kerio.com/kpf) as well. It's free for home use and a strong piece of software.

Hi, Thanks !
Is this firewall also free (unlimited time) ?

Maybe the free version of Zonealarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?lid=dbtopnav_za) would be a better choice for Sonya. Kerio can be a bit overwhelming for someone with little experience with firewalls. :)

April 17th, 2005, 12:41 PM
Yeah. When you download it it starts as a commercial version, lasts 30 days, then it switches to free mode (web content filtering/adblocking disabled. I don't use that anyway, as it's not a security issue but a child protector IMO and I also have a separate product for that). NO nag screens, and gives a very solid performance.

Ok since I know NOTHING .Can someone tell me what all this is? And what does locked mean?
I just run it, and this was the end result.

Trojans.... Note: Command.EXE shouldn't exist - the file should be named Command.COM - so thats for sure a trojan. Delete this file Command.EXE.
Hint: Do not delete command.com !
The other files are infected as well. Please delete them too.
Did you enable AH (Advanced Heuristics) and Runtime Packer support?
If not, please enable this and scan again - maybe it detects then even more.

locked means it's in so called exclusive mode used from the system.
Nothing to worry about in your case. It's normal that this files cannot be scanned.

It is the scan results. NOD32 found a number of viruses (5 in fact) that managed to get past your systems previous protection. Did you remove them? i.e. were you given the option to remove them as they were found? If no, then you will have to run another scan by pressing the 'Clean' button.
A locked file is one that Nod32 is not able to open (like the backup files in adaware or a password protected zip file). There is no need to fret about these.

Delete.
A trojan is not a virus - and can therefore not be cleaned - trojans have to be deleted completely.

Hello Sonya,
Go into the nod32 option and select 'run nod32' (on right) after a few seconds a new window will popup and this will have 4 tabs at the top, select 'setup' and look at the items on the right. :) under 'diagnostic methods' I also select everything under the 'scan' option on the left with the exception of ntfs.
Hope this helps?
Toby.

Hint: You can also run a 'in-depth-analysis'
There are all settings enabled to maximum.
Just scan with this until you figured out how to make your settings.

I just discovered this tutorial myself. It is a great guide for a new user.
I would beg to differ with Blackspear on one small point: In the Scheduler/Planner (see Post #20 in the tutorial) I also checked the third box, which runs the Updater as soon as I log on. Then, when I check e-mail, as I usually do after logging on, NOD32 is scanning it with the latest virus signature file.

Wow!!! And just to think the AV and FW I had before (today) was letting all those get rite by, hmmmm? ::)
