National Hero

It was 25 years ago today that a young man named Terry Fox dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic ocean that began his "Marathon of Hope" run across Canada for cancer research. For 5,373 kilometres and 143 days, Fox battled wind and snow, then stifling heat and pain, before having to stop outside Thunder Bay, Ont., because of a recurrence of cancer. He died 9 months later...

His herculean effort had raised millions of dollars then, and 100's of millions since for cancer and a marathon in his name is still run in many countries around the world.

His likeness was put on the Canadian dollar coin last month.

He is a national hero to all of us here and i'm sure to many others around the world.

He ran 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada's Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario. :o

I remember reading about Terry Fox and seeing a special on with his story told, and being really humbled.

He is just what we and the young ones need today, Inspirational and totally UnSelfish, and still Humble? That's a tall order for anyone, to go through all that he did, then on his own to use it to help make others aware enough to give the help he needed to others. What an indomitable Spirit!!

Those are the stories and the people you remember all of your life!

Good for Canada, to remember someone for the total Good they have done, without politics or exaggerations.

Honestly, this world is horrid and more evil than good, but it's people like Terry Fox that inspire and create a foundation of hope to all of us.
I live in Australia, have no mental of physical disabilities. When I hear stories like this and others, it not just inspires me, but reminds me of how much in life I take for granted. :-\

Truly one of the greatest heroes of all.
His legacy serves as an example of what can be accomplished and
is a true inspiration to me. There is the Terry Fox Run in Quebec organised every year. The Terry Fox Run is not only about raising funds for cancer research, but also preserving the dream and integrity of Terry Fox himself.

Also...another person I admire... Rick Hansen from British
Columbia. "Rick Hansen was paralyzed in 1973. In his wheelchair,
he traveled 24,901 miles through 34 countries and 4 continents in
order to raise money for spinal cord research."
Both of them touched everyone's heart for they gave more than they could.

Seeing him bravely hobble on those lonely rainy highways epitomizes all good things Canadian. I feel honoured to come from the same country as Terry Fox.

I was fortunate to see Rick Hansen go right in front of my house in Ontario. Unforgetable.
