Is there a way to access Gmail through a client? (Such as Thunderbird?) I found gPopper on MajorGeeks, but I am not sure if it is safe. Does anyone have any expierence with it?

You can enable pop3 acces via their website. Then configure the access through thunderbird. Settings are on Gmail site.
