Computer troubles are brewing....sigh

Hi,
I am having troubles with a few things for awhile now...

1. When trying to download some things, Yahoo Messenger is one of them, it says that .dll files are missing.

2. When trying to read mail on Yahoo all I get is a white blank screen.

3. When trying to do a Housecall scan it says, " Your current settings prohibit running Active X controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display properly" I am unable to run the scan, it never loads.

4. Last night I was even unable to go to any websites, I did a reboot on the computer thinking maybe the system was low, but that didn't help. It still won't go this morning.

This is my daughter's compter and I think she may have a lot of unwanted things on her computer, but not sure how to get rid of it all.

Please help. I have ran an Ad-aware scan so far. I was going to download Hijack This, but haven't yet. I also installed PC-cillin and System Mechanic and hopefully didn't mess something up with that.

Update....
I just had the phone guy come out to the house and he checked the IP address info and things. He said everything is correct for the DSL, he thinks it may be a winsock problem. There is also a possible problem with a dns error when loading Yahoo. He exited the PC-cillin thinking it may of had something to do with a firewall, but that didn't fix it either. Hmmm..... ???

Ouch ! The active x thing is probably a setting on your computer under internet options . Possible firewall deal too . The dll missing can be bad . It almost sounds like you need to start over . Have you tried to install SP 2 again ? Do you even have SP2 ? And what OS do you use ? That will help us a bit better . Thanks

Hi,
I am running Windows 98, possibly second ed.
I don't know what SP 2 is.....

Here's what is going on now.

I found a log file of System Mechanic and restore it. It did fix the internet page loading problem. Thank the Lord!!! :D

I am still having trouble with the other things....loading the Yahoo mail page, active X, and .dll files.

I did go to the dll file page you suggested, but they didn't have the file I needed. I did put in a request for the one I need on that website. This is the message I get when trying to download Yahoo Messenger...

Could not load the DLL Library.
C:\windows\TEMP\YVerTr.dll
The system cannot find the file specified.

For the Active X thing...we have the security set at medium-low. We thought lowering it would help, but it didn't. Is there something else we were suppose to do? Also I see that there are places to download Active X, but I'm afraid to download them becouse it seems they will come with spyware. I think one I wanted to try wanted you to agree to Emule. If I'm remembering correctly that isn't something I want on my computer.

Also once I was able to get on the web I went and downloaded Foxfire. How wonderful....It makes page loading so much faster even on my other computer with dial-up.

After I can hopefully get these few problems worked out, I would like to have some help cleaning out junk from the computer if possible. I am almost sure that there are a lot of junk on it.

Hi all,
Just wanted to update you on what we have accomplished...

My daughter downloaded IE 5 and that fixed the Active X problem. I was then able to run a Housecall scan and there weren't and viruses, etc. She did run a PC-cillin scan and it did find several worms and trojans. Not sure, but I think she cleaned them because I ran another scan and it was clean.
She was also able to download Yahoo Instant Messenger.

After installing Firefox, I was also able to go to my yahoo mail.

So we have fixed our troubles that we started with, but I would really appreciate it if someone could help me clean her machine up a bit. Can I clear things from the start menu on msconfig? Can we do a high jack log and see what things are unnessasary? Or what else could we do to clean it up? I do have Sysatem Mechanic, but sometimes I don't feel confident enough to use some parts of it. Like the duplicate files....it usually comes up with thousands of files, but I don't know what is okay to delete. How about junk files. I did that and it deleted things that ran yahoo messenger and stuff so how do I know what is safe to get rid of?

Any help out there??? ;D

You can post a hijackthis log at http://forums.spywareinfo.com This site (Wilders Security) no longer does hijackthis logs, as far as I know. Hope that helps.

msconfig will not clean up start menu items but will clean some (not all) startup items. Maybe this is what you meant?

If you don't have anti ad/spyware app I would recommend downloading Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ or Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html which are both freeware. But after you run those please run Spyware doctor http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/ the new version is very good and also has keylogger guard and much more and see what you think. Although it is payware the new version is well worth it.
