Better for?
Detection wise, Command/Authentium AntiVirus may have the edge;

Avast has superb support both from the Company and from their forum. I have had very good support from Authentium UK.
However, Command/Authentium is still thought of as a Corporate AV rather than a Home product.
Avast Home is free, compared to $19 for CSAV. Avast Pro is $40/annum initial purchase price, but this can be reduced down to $25/annum with a 3-year license.

Both CSAV and the new Avast Home would be suitable for older computers as they both have little effect on system performance.
Both would give you good protection and so the advice as usual is to trial the two and see which one you and your system like the most.
However, the trial version of CSAV used to be an out of date demo version. If this is still the case, you might have to ask for a temporary account code to download the latest version.
Edit: Avast would appear to be one of the better free AV's in detection rates as judged by FF's tests.

The scan engine of Avast! may not be the very best in the market, but it suffices for a home user. It boasts of great features like a Web Shield, Heuristics for Email etc. Moreover, there is hardly a hit on the system performance.
Avast! is a gr8 resident scanner, and you can have a backup on-demand scanner like Bitdefender Free or Antivir PE.

After some thinking I would recommend avast!... It's a good program and very easy to use, and doesn't hit system peformance, and works very nice with ZA Free as well :)
Vlk (from awill) said they gonna make huge detection improvements in the future 5.x versions (the next release after the current 4.6.xxx serie)...
Still think avast!'s detection is nice and will protect home users good enough...
I recommend people to buy a three year license for avast!, it will cost you only $25 a year and you will have updates to all future program versions as well... A low cost for nice protection :)
