View Full Version : Recommendations please - Best Free on demand AT scanner

As the title says, I'm looking for a really good FREE on demand AT scanner for occasional use (manual weekly scans). I don't want constant real time protection and don't mind updating manually. Detection is of paramount importance.

Can you guys recommend some scanners that fit the bill.

Thanks,

Ned

Hi Ned Slider, ;)

Here are 2 options, I don't think there are any other free ATs besides these two:

Ewido - http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
A² - http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

Both are good programs, try them both ... and if you'd like keep them both. ;)

HTH,

Steve

Is the mwav escan scanner a good trojan detector? Maybe it is better as a back up to a pure AT?

I think you could be right - I found a trojan dialer using mwav eScan that a2 and ewido both missed. I thought these were supposed to be specialist AT scanners yet they're not finding trojans that an AV package is ???

This is not a very good advise.. you point the guy to all sorts of AV-programs. An AT program like Ewido and A2 or TDS-3 is much better on Trojans. The two first are even better on malware and such.

eScan uses a modified KAV engine so trojan detection is very good.

Any scanner, AV or AT will not detect 100% of malware. So I use KAV but I also have a2 and Ewido as anti-trojan backups.

Have you sent the dialer to a2 and Ewido so they can add it to their databases?

Not all the time, as outlined above ;)

Some AV programs such as KAV, Dr Web and McAfee would give, IMHO, the dedicated AT programs a good run for their money in trojan detection. The AT's, however, may be better at cleaning the infection.

But no harm in layering your trojan defences. Why don't you keep the free eScan and Ewido/A2.

No, but I would be happy to do so. Please could you provide details as to how I would do this.

Thank you,
