Please help a solution to comment and guestbook spam

I run a small personal website/blog that also has a guestbook. In recent years, I have being hit by bots spamming comments and guestbook entries.

I can ban the ips, but it's a never ending battle. Any ideas? I can use CGI, PHP, ASP etc.

Since I am not a blogger, I know very little about this subject. I have read articles about it becoming a huge problem.

I Google'd the term "blog spam" (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=%22blog+spam%22&btnG=Search) and came up with some interesting stuff. Here (http://www.markcarey.com/spamdb/) is a site that publishes a database of domains that bloggers use.
