What do you look for in a virus protection program?

??? The Wildman looks for a program that is easy on the memory, has fair detection, has guard capability and is easy to use an maintain. Due to a limited fixed income, free ware is essential. Eye candy is not necessary.

I want and expect excellent detection, reasonable resource use and frequent database updates. And is not a maze to find the settings. A decent price doesn't hurt either. Two av's come to mind that fit that bill.

I'll echo bigc -- with the addition of one more item, good and easily accessible tech support. My personal favorite is freeware, and (with the possible exception of easily found settings, there's hot debate about that) meets the bill neatly.

I expect excellent detection out of my AV. Interface is not that important but its good to have a good interface. It should be feature rich and not cost too much (in the range of $29.95-34.95).

It should have minimal CPU drain and update at least once a day.

My criteria are: excellent detection capabilities,a monitor/guard,frequent(if not daily)updates,and good support.I also favor programs that can "unpack" files and have heuristics.
Reasonable price factors in also.

When I'm looking for a virus scanner, I look for anything that doesn't say Norton on the box :P
