Since I use the Draytek Router I stopped using Zonealarm. Was that a smart move?

The security of the internal firewall is not as good as zonealarm, i think

Any takers on this issue?

A hardware firewall only stops incoming attacks, port scans and so on. There is no extra tooling on board (intrusion detection and logging analysis).

Most current software firewalls also handles outgoing connection, so a trojan connecting outbound will be trapped. Leaktests will show what happens with and without a software firewall (that in fact adds functionality, like file integrity checking, that could be part of the operating system).

In fact the security of an external box is not bad. It usually adds network address translation, thereby hiding you infrastructure and blocking direct attacks.

Yep,

I agree:
Having a hardware firewall gives a very good extra layer of security. But you still need indeed a software firewall for outbound protection.
The Draytek Vigor 2200E gives you more possibilities than only protection by NAT; you can make rules in it.

BTW: there is a forum from Draytek:
http://www.draytek.co.uk/forum/index.php

Oops sorry, you're right Fraha.
Indeed their forum-rules say:
-{ Quote: "Membership is open to current owners of a Vigor router within the UK whose product was supplied via legitimate UK channels from a DrayTek authorised dealer. " }-

Fraha,

For the Dutchies there is also a support-forum.
Go to http://www.draytek.nl/
Then go to "Vragen (FAQ), Support en Downloads".
Then at the bottom of that site you will see a link to "Gebruikersforum":
"Er is ook nog een Gebruikers Forum waar u uw problemen en opmerkingen kwijt kunt."

I hope you can get into that forum in case you want to.

PS1: Maybe you have to lower your security-settings (ActiveX and/or Java).

PS2: for the non-Dutchies: sorry for some Dutch language in this posting.

There is also a German site with a very detailled pdf configuring a Vigor router with a Kerio firewall.
The essential pictures are in English.
The site is: http://www.vigor-users.de/
with the pdf:
http://www.vigor-users.de/cgi-bin/topdl/download.pl?file=firewall.pdf
Hope this helps
