The best AV is the one which suits you best.

The usual recurring question.
The best for overall malware detection is a Kaspersky-engined AV.
However, the best AV for you is the one that suits both you and your unique system.
It is no use selecting an AV which supposedly gives the best protection if it slows down your computer to a crawl or causes conflicts with your other software or hardware. You may therefore need to balance both the protection and performance of an AntiVirus program in making your choice.
You will find a lot of different answers here as security software can be a very personal decision.
Trial some of the ones listed here and then make your choice;

Like two of the other replies hint at no installed av program is a substitute for "common sense" :-its by far the most powerful av you can find!

Hmm, price is always a factor for me, so I will let others speak to this. Sorry. :(

Kaspersky is best. If your box can't handle the load, then NOD32 or DrWeb.
